Wayne-

How do you determine valedictorian? Is it also over the last 5 tanks only? And is there a freshness date (do you discount cars that have not been heard from in X months in favor of current contributors)? Thanks.

___First lets congratulate a new member going by the nick Escapee in his Escape HEV known as Escape Hybrid FWD. This is the first Escape HEV to hit a 40 lmpg. Placing into the Valedictorian list in just 5 tanks is an honor as well. These Escape guys are really punching out great numbers as of late

___Next we have another Valedictorian amongst us driving an Insight. Please welcome and congratulate Marsha Ness with her Insight 5-speed named Rubber Band. I wish I had more information but her tank details are sparse and she hasn’t been heard from around these parts. Marsha, feel free to join us in the forums sometime, OK

___And another 5-speed Insight? Wow, 2 in one update! Please congratulate Rigger and his Insight named Wasabi as he finally input his 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tank with an average some hybrid drivers would die for!

___And we have 2 Prius II’s! I didn’t expect to be adding one of those hybrids let alone two to the list this late in the year but low and behold, 2 hypermilers right off the lot! Please welcome and congratulate both Davem5321 and Keeponrunning in their Prius II’s named Blue Two and Marathon Maniac respectively. Dave hit the road running P&G’s from tank #2 onward and KeepOnRunning did it the old fashioned way, “Nice and Easy” Good Luck to the both of you now that the cold temps have hit in both of your respective locales …

___I have been neglecting the non-hybrids so I finally beat my way through the list w/ year and car type descriptions and then back to the EPA for FE ratings. This is really hard to keep up with but here goes …

___Please congratulate the following individuals:

Sno779 and his 04 Golf TDI named Little Tractor. I guess the biggest deal with his TDI is that he added 41,000 + miles of tanks in just 2 days! Sno, you have to take care of those temperatures or tell us you were driving on the planet Venus all these years

___And Lindermant in his 05 Civic DX w/ Auto named Itsacommuter. Although his notes are a bit thin, his FE has been improving as temperatures have been falling! Let us just say the Green Hybrid effect is really taking hold with this one

___And SVOboy in his 91 CRX named simply Honda. An Acetone believer I guess … Hmmm?

___And our first Scion driven by MOXB and named Boxcar. Another one of those no tank noter’s?

___Krousdb, the EPA did not list a FE rating for your 97 Subaru Outback? Care to help me out on this one?

___And Cronosin in his 05 Saturn ION named Layla. Good luck on holding on to the EPA combined as the weather turns colder …

___And Jhill98 in his 1990 Buick Skylark named Jhill98.

___And Catskillguy in his 1998 Chevrolet Lumina named Chev. No notes, no comments?

___And Preludemd in his 2001 Honda Prelude named Honda … Good notes and he is taking public trans now. Best FE news of all!

___And AZCivic in his 2001 S2000 named Arizona S2000. Not bad for Autocrossing and a lot of city!

___And No. 6 in his 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue named Intriguing. No notes again

___And Per in his 1994 Ranger P/U named Lone Ranger. No notes but a Ranger P/U? That is # 3 on our list

___And Tdsmu in his 2001 Chevrolet Venture named The Silver Slug. Best note of the update: Short tank … I had to take advantage of $1.99 per gallon.

___And Kettledrum in his 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue named Intrigue Baby. Std. issue notes …

___And Wimp297 in his 2001 Honda Odyssey named Oddy. No notes again …

___That was a lot of work … I had to pull the final 10 non-hybrids off the list on page 1 due to blowing through the character # in a single post again. I will PM Jason to see if he can up the character length for this thread to 20,000 by the weekend.

___Good Luck

Wayne,
The 97 Outback is rated 26 Highway and 19 City.

And be prepared within the next few weeks for a new non-hybrid, a 1986 Honda CRX HF. See ebay item 4591971993. I will be flying down to Ft. Myers to pick it up and drive it back next weekend. It will become my daily driver. The EPA estimates are 54 Hwy and 49 City. I'm hoping to crack 65 on my daily commute, which would be close to what I do in Silk Shorts. My wife will be wearing the Silk Shorts in this family. ;-)

I'm gonna spend some time on bodywork and have her repainted. She will also get aluminum wheels. Unfortunately, affordable aluminum wheels are only available in 14", not 13" which is stock. I will end up with taller tires (+4 mph speedo error) with a tread width about 8% wider than stock. I am hoping the taller final drive ratio will help to offset the extra rolling resistance.

Looks like I will need an intro course on hypermiling a Honda HF.

krousdb,

I had two Honda CRX HFs - a 1986 and a 1988. Don't know your circumstances, but if you could find a good deal on one 88-92, it could be worth the wait:
  • It's fuel-injected, not carburated
  • It's has a lower Cd
  • It's slightly larger
  • City 50mpg, Highway 56mpg
  • Better front bumper clearance.
I need to stress the last point. The 88 and later CRXs took bumps much better than the earlier ones. This is becauce the clearance under the front bumper was improved. In fact, one way to tell is a CRX had abusive driving is to look at the lower front bumper molding. If it's not straight, it was driven rough.

For me it is more sentimental then anything else. I am in the midst of my midlife crisis and I have a hankering for a manual shift two seater. My first choice was a 1970 AMX 390 ci 4 speed. I had one of those a long time ago, but now you can't get a decent one for under 12k. The hypermiling potential is quite poor.

My second choice was a first generation CRX. In 1985, I bought my first new car, a red CRX HF. I put 275k miles on it and sold it in 1990 when I had the need for more than two seats. Average MPG was 45. Best tank was 66 (Chicago to Detroit, 55 MPH with a tailwind). Just about the time I sold it, my brother bought a new 90 CRX HF. I had a chance to drive it and found that I liked my old 85 better.

I have been been watching the 88-91's on ebay and in the local paper but the good ones are more than I can afford. The one I ended up buying has had every major mechanical part replaced or rebuilt. With the exception of a few rust spots, it is a new car. Not bad for $1500.

Delta,
I have been researching the CRX and have found some conflicting info. Maybe you or someone else can clarify. I found two CRX related websites that claim the 84-87 CRX HF had a 1.3L engine. But I have in front of me the original window sticker from my 85 CRX HF that clearly states a 1.5L (1488) engine. IIRC, the 84 HF had the 1.3L but a switch to the 1.5 was made for the 85 model year.

I also noticed on the window sticker that the car came standard with an "Economy Driving Indicator System". For the life of me I can't remember such a system on the car. Does anyone know what that was?

And finally, the MSRP was $6479. The total cost was $6,658.

Those were the days!

The indicator system might have been a shift indicator? I had an Escort GT with that once- if I followed it I got very good mileage, but being 17...

Woo Hoo! My name is in lights. We'll see how long I stay. I have to go fillup soon and I think this one will bring me down more. I racked up some miles on my recent trip but didn't do as well as I could of (I blame it on the "co-pilot"). I'll keep my mouth before I put my foot in it.
