Recommended oil?

Re: Recommended oil?
bigbrian1980, no problem. When I first bought my 2007 TCH I went way back reading all the interesting post on how to improve my gas mileage. Just over a year ago I read well over 100 post and replied to about 25 of them.

Join us over at BobistheOilGuy.com forums if you'd like a more detailed discussion of oil choices (by way of disclosure, I'm an admin over there, but not a stakeholder of any type). If this sort of "referral" is counter to this board's policy or owner preference, please accept my apologies and delete at will. Another good source of oil info is the Noria.com site.

Re: Recommended oil?
I agree with the 0W-20 especially as the weather is getting colder. You've already read Toyota's recommendation.
If you prefer getting the oil changed at the dealership, you may want to specifically request the 0W-20 and verify that the 0W-20 gets into your car. Most delaerships still have 5W-30 in their BULK tank.
The dealerships should have the Toyota 0W-20 genuine fluid in quarts. And more dealerships are getting 0W-20 in bulk as more owners request it.
If you are a DIYer (Do It Yourselfer), consider ENEOS Fully Synthetic 0W-20.
ENEOS is manufactured by Nippon Oil who also supplied the 0W-20 that was in your car when you bought it.

Re: Recommended oil?
Toyota recently announced that they are moving to 0W-20 across the board.
In the July 1, 2008 Edition of Flashpoint, ILMA has announced that Toyota has officially decided to switch the recommendation on engine oil for certain vehicles from SAE 5W20 and SAE 5W30 to SAE 0W20.
ILMA reports that these changes will affect all Toyota brands, including Toyota, Scion and Lexus. The change will also appear in owner's manuals.

Re: Recommended oil?
Will local mechanics carry Mobil-1 0W-20 synth? I have seen it at Target, I wonder if they will change my oil with that if I bring them 5 quarts of the stuff.
If we are using synthetic oil, doesn't the warranty still require that the oil be changed every 5,000 miles?

Re: Recommended oil?
My dealer still has only 5w-20, so I continue to bring in my own quarts of Mobil-1. I only give them 4 quarts, though, because I found if I give them 5 they overfill it a bit.

Re: Recommended oil?
We are now seeing Toyota/Lexus/Honda dealerships moving to bulk 0W-20 because many of their vehicles require it. But, most importantly, because customers are specifically requesting 0W-20.
When the dealerships brings the 0W-20 in bulk, the cost to the dealership and the customer should go down.

Re: Recommended oil?
One would hope, but the skeptic in me says the profit to the dealer will increase.

Re: Recommended oil?
I have found about 4 1/4 quarts works out. You could easily add the extra when you pick up your car at the dealer.
I let my car sit over night and then check the level the next day before cranking the engine. If it's the least bit low, I add oil to bring it to level.
I have used the 0W-20 oil starting last winter. I gained a little gas mileage and the car runs great even in the hot 100 degree summers.
