I just joined and thought I would introduce myself.
I purchased a 2006 Prius with Package 4 on 1/4/06. After 295 miles I decided it was time to put some gas in it. For that first tank I got 39.6 MPG. I decided for that first tank I would drive the car just like I have driven for the last 37 years.
For my next tank of gas I am going to start trying more conservatively and see if I can improve over the first tank.
90% of my driving is Urban stop and go with many hills, with a normal commute of 15 minutes. One thing I certainly noticed is the first 5 minutes my gas milage looks pretty bad (around 25 MPG), after that I average closer to 40 MPG.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my Prius. My other cars are a 2004 Saturn Vue AWD and 1994 Mazda B4000 4WD pick up. I just got rid of a 1995 Explorer w/4WD and the environment will certainly be a better place becasue of that.

Jim,
I am new to this forum as well (bought my Prius in October 2005). Your commute sounds similar to mine (15 minutes, stop and slow urban driving). One major thing that I notice is different is the climate. You are in Omaha, NE and I am in Houston,TX. The temperature difference will severely impact your mileage since the gas engine will run more to provide heat to the cabin and keep the engine a temperature to minimize emissions.
