The vacuum from the hose connected to the airbox keeps the engines internal passages at a lower pressure. If you remove the hose and just run a filter the pressure will be higher in the crankcase and it causes sludge to build up. The more miles (wear) the engine has on it the more the tolerances internally have loosesned up and more of the combustion gasses leak and need to be vented. So the sludge issue is minimal in the begining of an engines life but it increases with wear. I have seen some really nasty sludge filled engines that did not have a functioning crankcase vent system. Race cars only run a vent because they don't care about the envirinment, they are new engines that are overhualed after the race, and combustion by-product gasses are not as combustible and are hot. Speaking of hot, an engine produces its best power with cool dense air. That is why most airboxes have a hose or opening facing the front of the vehicle to try and pick up the cooler air coming in from outside of the engine compartment.

Just food for thought before doing the mods.
Excellent info and now you mention I have not only felt air movement but it can be heard as well.
I argued the cool air theory here once and was shot down with it is about the lean burn (hot air) not the power (cool air).

...so I'm about to buy the muffler for my 05 HCH. Can anyone tell me what the difference as far as performance and sound is between the original muffler posted on this website by Duc, the hedder unit I beleive, versus a dynomax, specifically this one http://www.dynomax.com/ultrafloweld.stm

In case anyone was wondering, the original air intake case is a plain vanilla filter box, it has no altitude compensation, emissions control, or any smarts that you lose by converting to another filter (as far as I can tell). I was worried that I would compromise emissions with this mod so I looked pretty carefully at it after I removed it. I will keep an eye on things next summer too, this may be a winter only mod since it will probably increase the intake air temp.

Also, I was thinking about other things that could increase power, anyone try the bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs? I am thinking about putting them in. I put splitfires in a new 1995 Dodge V8 once, they promised ~4% increase in power and FE and pretty much delivered as advertised. I like the bosch because you don't have to gap them, they cost a lot more than splitfires however, but I only have to buy 4 this time. :-)

Thing to remeber is anything with packing will get louder with time as the packing breaks down and blows out. Not saying it won't be quiter just making you aware that packing does not last.

I did it to my Insight. Not going to do it to my HCH though. On the Insight I just went with the CC Breather as well Mileage has gone up up up but I also did the radiator block since the temp has gone down lately.

I have not noticed any difference with just the intake mod. The temp dropped here right after I made the mod and has not gone back up yet so that may be affecting it. I am going to switch back this weekend and see if it gets worse next week. I am not an experienced hypermiler either so I am not the best one to render an opinion on this.

well, I did the intake mod and hooked the filter to the cc instead of using a seperate filter, the weather has also dropped so i've been driving mostly without ac... My regular tanks since I've had the car had been between 31 mpg's to around 34mpg's at the best... so far, after the mod, my car is in the 42's so I'm guessing that it'll only get better after this. BTW, I still haven't changed the oil since I bought it and I'm still looking for options regarding the muffler so that I can do that mod as well. Will try to change the oil this week and see if that helps it any...

Cool glad to hear! Are you going to do your own exhaust or pay someone? Either way just use clamps instead of welding the muffler and try a few until you find one you like, cost money but beats noise.

well, i'm one of those guys that has a friend that has a friend.... so i'm awaiting for my friend's word to go to his friend's shop (he has an auto parts shop) and see what comes of it with the muffler.

So the dynomax have that filler in the muffler that you say will eventually grow louder and louder eh....

then how about magnaflows?

Not sure I only know about the packing because the link you sent showed/advertised it. It may last for years I couldn't say but on a bike it doesn't last but a few months (depending on how much you ride).
