I got brave during the last half of the tank and didn't use the a/c at all and my mpg went up substantially.

 

I am also in Phoenix and this is my 2nd HCH and I have had them since 2/2002.

I have a 30 mile commute each way and when it is this hot out, there is not much you can do. I accelerate slowly and I put the a/c on 1 fan mark and the temp at 80 and while it sure is warm to start, that seems to make a huge difference.

The HCH 1 was better in the summer but worse in the winter.

Just be excited for all but our summers where we get great mpg and everyone else has poor mileage because it is too cold where they are.

 

what kind of mileage are you getting per tank here in phoenix?

I have only had my car in the summer. I can't wait until it cools off and I do not need to use the A/C. I want to see what type of mileage I can get.

?? If you set the AC to 78, as I do, but then turn the fan speed **** slower so that the AUTO disappears, does the climate control still function on auto or will it constantly blow at the speed you set and thus never turn the compressor off?

 

dunno for sure, but I *think* setting any portion manually (mode, AC, fan speed) still allows everything else to function automatically to attempt to hold the set temperature.

for example, when you have it on auto, set to, say, 80, and then manually switch to AC OFF, the system will still alter the fan speed and mode (floor, dash, etc) to try to attain the set temp.

So I imagine when you have it on auto, set to, say, 80, and then manually select a fan speed, the system will still automatically cycle the AC on and off to attempt to maintain the set number.

I sometimes manually select fan speed because I find that on Auto the fan speed is sometimes a couple notches too low. (My guess is the engineers coded it this way because blowing more air over the evaporator forces the compressor to cycle more often.)
