Default when should battery blend door be open vs closed

I have a 2009 MMH and it's easy to visually check the blend door and lately I always see it closed.

My guess is...
if the out side air and battery are cool, the blend door should be closed and fans won't run.
Once the battery warms up, blend door should open, both fans operate, and allow for out side air circulation if outside air is cool enough
If the outside air is hot, and battery is hot, the blend door closes and fans run to circulate the AC cooled air

Is this the way it's supposed to work? can anyone confirm or correct my guess.

Makes sense. First it opens the blend door and tries fans/air. Then it closes the door and runs the a/c. Then it turns off hybrid mode if still hot. It might also depend on how fast you are going as it tries not to run the fan at low speed for noise.
