We Road Test the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT: Is it the First True Performance SUV EV?
Electric Vehicle Forums recently tested 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT; we had to know if the new GT editions delivered on a more action-packed and stable ride.
Many auto enthusiasts will simply never accept an all-electric Mustang Mach-E. We hear you. It is undeniable that Ford delivered a well designed and cool SUV-based five-seat EV. But this the Ford Mustang. It was going electric? Everyone seemed to have questions and doubts. The Blue Oval would never! But they did. To take the groundbreaking Mustang into new territory, Ford built a custom EV platform for the sublime pony car.
Almost everyone thought it was a bad idea. Surely the Silverado would be easier? And how much muscle and Pony car kick could an electric car really generate. Could a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT really carry the torch of a genuine performance car?
Some of you have already rolled your eyes. And we get it. Writer, editor, content manager, and photographer Michael S. Palmer was also dubious. It might be a bitter pill going down, but the Mustang Mach-E GT is really something. But is that something enough?
Ford Mustang Mach-E: Then & Now
Ford has generously shown the 2022 Mustang Mach-E. And the new options are stirring up excitement. First and foremost, how will the 2022 Mach-E GT and GT Performance options change the ride? According to the early data from Ford (as well as the many teasers) then facts will write this story: The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is one thrilling, performance oriented SUV EV.
Considering Ford’s history, that is a lot to live up to. Especially in such foreign territory. But the Blue Oval is undeterred.
Ford will be selling four models of the Mach-E for 2022. Going up the ladder in cost and extras, this includes the Select, California Route 1, Premium, and GT. A GT Performance option is included with the sportier GT SUV. Spring of this year will also see the debut of the gas-running Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage. This marks 55-years since Shelby’s first iteration of the Ford Mustang. And it is one hell of gift for a lucky few.
Carroll Shelby was the force of nature behind some one of the most fantastic racers, pony and muscle cars, and his vision of sporty and sports cars was inspired and heart-thumping. Without question, the Shelby GT500 and GT500 Heritage will sell fast when sales open later this spring. Additionally, keeping Shelby’s name and spirit indelible contributions in the Mustang mythology. it effectively ties in the past and future.
That future includes the first ever Mustang Coastal Edition, plus Ford Performance options include exclusive Code Orange paint. Later this fall there will be a California Special that features GT Performance Package, aka the Mustang California for short.
And the Stealth Edition Appearance Package is a bombshell with its a murdered-out sleek style. It’s one way to celebrate. Adding more power to the pack is another. For will be adding the California Special that features GT Performance Package option
“[It is] the first real car I’m really proud of,” Shelby said of the GT500. His love of cars and the untapped limits was the impetus that pushing him towards new performance highs.
Carroll Shelby called the original Shelby GT500 “the first real car I’m really proud of.” The Shelby GT500 is just as iconic today – as the most powerful and most advanced Mustang ever – as it was during its first iteration 55 years ago.
Putting the Ford Mustang Mach-E to the Test
Palmer recently spent some time testing the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. But he also had a serious question to answer: Is the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E GT a true high-performance SUV?
He was especially focused on finding answers. Had Ford pulled it off? In the video–posted at the end–Palmer goes through all the car’s details and specs. It’s a thorough look at the ins and outs of the Mustang Mach-E GT.
Admittedly, he confesses that he loves the ICE Ford Mustang and its rich tapestry of characters and brilliant machines. But he is really trying not to be biased. Which is pretty easy when you see the nuts and bolts. It looks great. So many elements went into consideratin. Little has changed since last year. The front looks fresh with a dark grille, light up logo, LED lighting, and minor aesthetic and aero upgrades.
The times, they are a’ changin’, and they’re doing so really fast. Ford had to get a major EV on the road, and add a lot of sizzle to the steak. Calculated risks can really pay off well, and as it turned out the new Mustang Mach-E was a hit. It nails power and performance. Following all speed limits, natch.
We don’t want to give away the ending, but when Michael and his brother go pedal down and launch, it sparks a huge smile. Palmer even gives us some old school Ric Flair style “Wooo!”
There is no shortage of fun in the Mustang. A lot of power is on tap, controlled but locked and loaded to pummel some asphalt. We love how this car works so smoothly. but handles just as it should. One the quarter mile it would be a punisher. But it lacks the nimble agility of a Porsche. But chances are if you are buying a Mustang–you want a Mustang. And it is there.
Palmer is especially pleased with the launch, the immediate oomph off the line, and how the SUV is sporty and just a joy to drive. It displays excellent weight management and balance. This is the good stuff, inspired and exciting. But will hardcore Mustang riders go EV? And does this pass the test for our intrepid writer?
The new Mustang Mach-E surpasses many with quality, torque, and a lot of satisfaction. Ford definitely grabbed attention the right way. Daring to take on an American icon in a rapidly changing electrified market shows a lot of spine. But can the automaker produce an all-electric ride that motorheads will take to? Can they live up to their adrenaline-pushing promises?
Time will tell–as will the video. But it easily can slay a trip to the grocery store, work, road trip, and a quarter mile. Then it pushes further to satisfy the need for speed; as well as offer comprehensive and intuitive tech, nice grippy tires, and easily prove its capability on all roads.
