Plug-in Hybrid Supercar??? Meet the Ferrari SF90 Stradale

Doug DeMuro reviews the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, a $700,000 all-wheel-drive supercar with almost 1,000 horsepower!

Supercar manufacturers seem to be thriving even amidst the ongoing global pandemic. Italian supercar brand, Lamborghini recently revealed that it managed to close the first quarter of 2021 with record sales. Even though Lambo beat Ferrari to the performance SUV segment, the prancing horse brand managed to retaliate by introducing the SF90 Stradale, and YouTuber Doug DeMuro recently got a chance to review the PHEV supercar.

With prices starting at just under $700,000, Ferrari SF90 Stradale is the only plug-in hybrid supercar that comes equipped with all-wheel drive and puts out around 986 HP of maximum power from its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged hybrid V8. The SF90 Stradale featured in the video is owned by David Lee, who runs his own YouTube Channel called Ferrari Collector David Lee.

Unfortunately, Doug did not dive deep into SF90 Stradale’s hybrid system, “Behind the trunk, where you can see a little glass window and then some hybrid components, sort of meant to mimic what cars look like when they show you the engine under the glass in the back.”

The SF90 Stradale’s hybrid drivetrain is composed of two electric motors that are located on the front axle. Ferrari also adds a third electric motor that sits between the car’s dual-clutch 8-speed gearbox and the internal combustion engine. The electric motors are powered by “a high performance” Li-ion battery pack, which is governed by Ferrari’s Control Logic system, along with other components of the hybrid powertrain.

The Control Logic autonomously regulates the power supply, and according to Ferrari, it “prioritizes performance over battery charging.” The system produces around 590 lb-ft of peak torque which helps the car accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds. The YouTuber, however, does offer a comprehensive look at all aspects of the SF90 Stradale’s interior, which like that of Ferrari Roma is a major departure from traditional Ferrari cabins of yesteryears.

“The most obvious thing you notice the moment you get in the SF90 is this new Ferrari interior with screens pretty much everywhere, and I mean everywhere, including for the Engine Start/Stop button, which is no longer a physical button. It’s now on like a little screen on the steering wheel,” said DeMuro.

When Ferrari first introduced SF90 Stradale, the supercar received some criticism for its electric steering and lack of storage. As it turns out, Doug also agrees that SF90 Stradale’s cargo capacity is not all that great, but he argues that as it is meant to be a high-performance machine and not a grand tourer.

Doug also shared his thought on the cabin layout, “everything in this car is sort of geared towards the driver. This is very much a driver-focused car, and you’re sitting in here, all of the dials, switches buttons. Screens, dashboard is all focused towards the driver that’s the main event here driving this car.”
