SEMA 2021

The biggest buzz at this year’s SEMA event was generated by EVs and electrification technology.

This year, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show was considerably different than prior years. Electrification is here, and its impact was apparent in exhibits and custom rides that were on display. EV conversions were big. Ford and GM introduced new electric crate engines to make the swap easier. This also opened the door to the possibility of a wide range of EVs; both new and old.

Although there was a dedicated SEMA Electrified section, the reverberation of e-mobility was felt throughout the show. Custom built EV and concepts were everywhere, and incorporated old and new.

Ford came in hot. Not only was their custom Ford F-100 a huge hit, but their a few Mustangs strutted their stuff on the floor and outside on the track.

While the cars and trucks looked great, seeing them tear it up is testament to their capability.

Enthusiasts and builders alike found new inspiration and new technology to make the transition to electric easier. And considerably more awesome.

One build that could make a grown man cry was the Porsche 911 conversion. Built by Electric GT, it is one compelling approach to making EV conversion kits that work beautifully with Porsche 911 and 912 models.

The Honda S2000 built by Rywire revived the slick nameplate as an electric vehicle slash killer track toy.

But these are not novelties, these custom builds and concepts will very much inform how automakers approach electrification. These vehicles are still fun, more performance-oriented, capable, and oh so cool.

Why so much retro? Nostalgia is powerful. And it demonstrates the industry is working to deliver cars and trucks that are evocative and provocative. It also worked for showcasing pony cars, off-roading trucks, and everything in between.

Aftermarket parts and components also pushed the envelope towards cleaner, greener, electric, and future technology.
