BEV Sport Hypercar from Lexus Could Shake Up EV Landscape

By 2030, Toyota plans to have 30 EV models in production. One of them may be the stunning BEV Sport hypercar.

We all know electric vehicles are inherently built for speed. Immense torque is just one of numerous benefits of powering a car with zap over boom. So why are all the current speed machines either 4-doors or speed-backs? Well, probably because they offer a bit more utility, but we’re soon to be a EV supercar revolution.

Lotus debuted their Evija last year, but at a cost of two million dollars. Lexus has another approach, as shown here. It’s called the BEV Sport, and news of this car came from Toyota kingpin Akio Toyoda as he covered a company wide announcement of battery electric vehicles. Not too many specifics were given, but a lot of significant goals were announced.

Battery tech is the biggest news, with Toyoda saying that solid-state batteries are a breakthrough tech for the future of EV mobility. If their research pans out, then the results will be impressive. Robb Report suggests that the solid-state batteries could supply a range of 430 miles, and hurl the BEV Sport to 60 miles per hour in “the low two-second” range. Charging figured aren’t provided either, but solid state batteries are known to be more energy dense, safer, and lighter weight.

Power specs aren’t given, but we could use the Evija as a comparison. They too are aiming for a sub two-second 0-60 time. Road & Track says that car is all wheel drive, and has 2000 horsepower. So we’d have to assume the BEV Sport would be about on that level. Lexus Cost? Probably not $2M, though. That lower cost could add an all new dynamic where a sports car EV takeover could be on the horizon.

Lexus and Toyota have proven that they are determined to keep sports cars alive and well. Their commitment to the GR86 is one such piece of evidence, and their patent for a “manual” transmission EV is yet another. These things give us some hope that Lexus will give the BEV Sport the green light. It would appear the only thing keeping it from going forward is Toyota’s pace on developing solid state batteries.
