boydwaters — The ICE icon only shows in the Multi-Functional Display when the ICE is actually providing power to the wheels. If the ICE is running only to charge the NiMH battery, to heat itself (and/or its catalytic converter) up, or just to re-heat itself periodically when its hot water is providing heat to the cabin, the ICE icon does not appear.

Did you check your tire pressure? with colder outside air they're probably low (is it something like 1 PSI drop per 10F?) I think it is more efficient to accelerate briskly using ICE and then maintain speed using electric, than trying to keep the car in electric mode at all time, during acceleration you're loosing a lot of battery charge.
