I think your calc was wrong.
These tires are larger than the standard, therefore they rotate slower and we observe slower speed.

A 215/65R16 tire would read 63.1 mph when your standard tire reads 65.
A 215/70R16 tire would read 61.2 mph when your standard tire reads 65
A 225/65R16 tire would read 61.9 mph when your standard tire reads 65

Top speed for my TCH is 85. At or above that speed, a terrible whine starts, and then I start to get buffeted, typically followed by my wife yelling, "Slow Down!"

WOW...... How did this thread go from Top Speed to tire size and calculations, all I originally tried to find out was if 119 mph is the governed top speed or has anyone gone faster. Oh, by the way does the mpg gauge( digital ) go higher than 99.9 mpg's?? On the same run at the start I went 17 miles and got 99.9 mpg and I was going around 45-50 mph on fairly flat ground.

Actually, there's a really cool diagram explained on another link https://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/...orum.9883.html
that shows how easily the top speed would be governed by the RPM's of the MG2 (traction motor.) Give it a whirl. It's fun. True, it's based on the Prius, but you still get the idea.

I've only seen 99.9 MPG pulling out of the gas station on electric for about 1/2 mile. I think that's the highest it goes.

Certz,

What kind of mileage did you instantaneous mpg gauge indicate when you were up at 119 mph?

I used the tire rack calculator.

Yes the tires are larger than standard and the rotation is slower. However I believe the circumference would then also be larger and thus the distance traveled per rotation is larger thus the higher speed reading.

I used the tire rack calculator.
It looks your condition was the same MG2 rpm.
My condition was the same vehicle speed.

I'm not following your comment well. Anyway, it's nothing we need to debate. Given the same rotational speed (either the MG2 rpm or the vehicle speed) the taller tire will cover more ground per rotation and the outer edge of the tire is moving at a faster speed than the smaller tire would and thus would give a speed reading that's too high. You could correct that by putting a shorter tire/wheel combo on the car.

Last week when I posted I thought you needed taller tires but after thinkging about it you do need shorter tires to make the correction. I'm guessing that's why Toyota put the 60 series tires on the vehicle. It was as close to accurate as they could get without putting a radical tire / wheel combo (read 45 series 17") on a family car.

Now I'm thinking that a set of 85 profile truck tires would give longer wear, lower rolling resistance, higher FE (readings not actual) AND I might pick up an additional 10,000 miles on a 100,000 mile warranty _ just kidding (although there may be someone just radical enough on this board to try that)
