I might have to pop the DVD out of my car and see what the file structure looks like... I doubt this would work, but I am curious. I also don't have a dual layer burner (which I assume I would need to burn a "hybrid" DVD to try it).

This is a fantastic idea!

In other words, could you take the map database from the 6.1 version, and the actual software from the 5.1 version, and burn your own? I know this isn't necessarily easy (since it probably isn't obvious which files are software and which ones are for the map database).

I am also curious - if you own both versions, could you swap them any time you wanted? So if I had to go somewhere that I might need the updated maps, I use 6.1, but for everyday driving (when I know where I am going), I could use the 5.1 version, and still have access to the OVERRIDE function?

Yes it is Dual Layer and otherwise unprotected. The drive transport can read the burned media. I made a copy of 5.1 and use it as my primary media with the original in a safe place.

Thanks for the info! So now we need to get someone with the 6.1v to get with you and have you burn a copy of the v6.1... then try your 5.1 in their car to see if it will work after having run the 6.1.

I also would like the updated maps, as there are lots of omissions here in Tucson, but would not like to loose the override function. LOL..such problems....such an excellent car that we have such truly insignificant issues to deal with.

Except for the fact that what you are suggesting is 100% illegal I'd be interested.
If you hold a 5.1 AND 6.1 license you could probably merge them but even that might fall into the reverse engineering exclusion most EULAs have these days.

Why? They say they can be removed by the owner.
