CVT 2004: Initial Rumble at Acceleration from Stopped
Hi, I am about to buy a used 2004 civic hybrid (cvt) from a private seller. The car appears to be in great shape and has just 32000 miles. I test drove the car yesterday and noticed when accelerating from stopped there is a momentary rumble or a grunting feeling from the engine. The seller told me that this was normal and is because of the way the hybrid technology works. Can anyone help me verify that this is indeed normal, or should I be weary about buying this vehicle?
Thanks.
Thanks.

It could also be the transmision needed to be flushed. It is a common problem and mine happend about 30-40K as well. I shouldn't be expensive if you have to pay for it, but the dealer did mine for free. I'm pretty sure there is a service bulliten on it.

Thanks for the tip. After reading your post, I called the dealer and meantioned the words "shudder" and "acceleration" and he seemed to know what I was talking about. I appreciate the help. He said a flush would cost $200 something, so let's hope that's all it is.
Thanks,
Jason
