I'm currently shopping fo an HCHII without NAV and have received offers of $21,383 for an 07 & $21,883 for an 08 but I am still negotiating. I also just confirmed the $2100 tax credit is still available.

I don't know if it's New Jersey or just my terrible negotiation skills, but I paid $23,289 for my 07 Civic with Navigation when I bought it last month. The dealers I contacted were quoting below invoice for regular Civics, but several hundred above for the hybrids. After making use of some "we'll beat local competitors by $200" a couple times, I just settled on the dealership that didn't treat me like crap.

For comparison I'll use my '06 where I bought all the option (there is only 1 option on the '06 which is the Navigation) so $24,200 for me. Bought it out of state (thanks, Leesburg Honda) and with some out-of-state taxes and things which probably pushed it over $24k I then added a 100k warranty since I was driving 4,000 miles a month (!!!). I would have paid $30k for it since it was saving me at least $5k-$8k PER YEAR over my old car (based on fuel savings and most of all the maintenance factor). Added Mudflaps/Splash Guards and a Block Engine Heater since purchasing. Glad to see prices are still staying up on these cars.

Former Honda new car salesman here:

gap insurance can be a decent idea if you drive something strange like a kia, izuzu, or hyundai, fords, etc.

Hondas and toyotas however are notorious for retaining their value. Strangely enough, a used for 6 months honda will often book higher in retail value than the price you paid for the car if you do a good job negotiating.

That's true, but it is hard to get retail value in practice. Most places are even lowballing at low kbb trade in value.

I'm pretty sure dealerships are trying a lot more on trade in than the new car deal.

Hello, folks!

Long time reader, first time poster...

I'll tell you that my wife and I haven't ever experienced such poor attitudes - downright apathetic and often rude - toward us as when we walk into a local Northern Virginia Honda dealership interested in an '08 HCH. From prices without budging in the mid-$24s to grossly overpriced "options" (that cannot be removed, of course), no one's interested in even talking with us (we found this at Toyota dealerships, too, when driving Prii...the guys spent most of their time texting in the back seats).

We've thought that part of the problem is that we arrive in a TSX with Navi - but that's hardly an SLR or LS600h, after all. But still, once they learn what we're driving, it's as if no one can comprehend that we want to add another car (we're undecided, as yet, if we're going to keep the TSX or sell it in favor of the hybrid).

We've done our best to be friendly, conversant, and fair. But with all the dealerships we've visited, we can't believe that the sentiment at local Honda dealers is so divergent from what we experienced at Acura.

In any case, VA tax on the car is low, so we're considering looking well outside of our normal range - to include Winchester or even as far south as Roanoke. Have any of you folks bought in those areas?

that sucks. There are plenty of dealerships that arent jerks to their customers. It might be worth it to look at buying the car in CAFE states, so you get the 10 year/150k warranty on the hybrid components.

You really need to contact the internet/fleet sales department. There's no apprehension, no games. No "fill out all the paperwork then we'll talk about price" bologne.

I used to sell cars for several different dealerships including honda and acura. I bought two '07 civics this year in April. A hybrid and an ex coupe. Got the EX coupe for $350 under invoice and the hybrid at invoice and that was including the destination charge.

Go to www.Edmunds.com and look up your car. It will give you an option to "get quotes from dealers in your area". Select that option and all the dealers. Then, change your zip code on the website to a neighboring city and get more dealers. I live in So cal and did this for everything within about 75 miles. The calls begin to pour in within about 10 minutes, emails too.

They say, "This is ________ and I'm responding to your email about the '07 civic hybrid. We have your model and the total price including destination is 22,895.00 plus tax and license. We'd be happy to assist you in your purchase and if you find a lower price anywhere else, just let me know!"

So, you field the calls, get your lowest price. Then start calling the other dealers with the lower rates or dealer near you and let them know you got a lower rate and voila! They drop their price. Do that several times 'til you start getting the "I can't go any lower" sob story and you've found your price. And remember to be nice. These guys get very little comission(internet/fleet managers). They're looking for an easy sale. Not hours of test rides and credit woes and dumb questions.

Also, if your credit score is 710 or higher, you qualify for honda's factory finance special rate of 2.9-4.9%

Hope this helps and good luck. Any questions, please ask. I'm always willing to help someone get a good deal. That's why I don't sell them anymore!

P.S. Remember to purchase your civic hybrid by Dec. 31st this year as the tax credit will be cut in half Jan 1st!

Dave

I totally agree with contacting fleet to get a car. I work in the fleet department and fleet customers are usually the happiest.
