Today I was going to change the serpentine belt on my Honda Civic Hybrid 2009 and I realized the belt routing for the HCH II is different than the belt routing on the 2009 according to the internet. The one referenced on the INTERNET for HCH II includes the water pump in the middle and the belt routing in my car seems to bypass the water pump. Okay, it’s pretty obvious something has changed in the 2009 model because my engine would have turned to dust by now if the water pump wasn’t operating. What I don’t know is why. Was there a belting routing update or did they change the engine on the 2009 models?

 

According to my Honda service manual covering years 2006-2009, there is no difference.

I was a little bit confused by the belt. The part no. Called out 4PK1600 for the HCH II belt which is ribbed on one side. As the belt makes its way around the water pump, the ribbed side of the belt is pointed out and the flat side of the belt is on the water pump. I would have thought that both sides of the belt would need to be ribbed. But I’m most likely looking at it wrong, I didn’t see the belt over the water pump at first glance.

 

IIRC, the pulley for the waterpump is polished smooth.


The vast majority of serpentine belts operate like this with one or more items driven by the flat side.
