What do you mean by technically it's a civic? Does it use a lot of the same parts or what?

The dash navi unit is the same in both. One similar part.

The CR-V is based off of the Civic Chassis. The engine is the same engine with a modified 4 wheel drive system.
This is the same practise used by others in the industry.
The RAV 4 is a Carolla Chassis, the Highlander is a Camary Chassis.
The Honda Oddessey Van shares platforms with Pilot and Ridgeline.
The Fit is all by itself for the moment.
Platforms are basically the industry's way of cutting down costs.
