Isn't that what the database is for?

I think the blog would be more useful if you were blogging your experiences with the car. That's what I assumed it was for when I read the title.

BTW, nice car and nice mileage.

thanks for the comps, noflash. not every day is eventful. database only measures btwn tanks. when i found this site, i found little about day-to-day differences, so i decided to blog about that. i know its boring and tedious, but if it benefits at least one person...
today:
12/45
5/54
9/38
5/42
6/60
=45.4mpg

Actually, mmrm, with Matt's post to his same thread he is not inflating his number of posts (if he made new posts everyday then it would).

I would still like to see some of what you are doing/not doing though. One day I did no Brake Regen but rather put the car in Neutral and used the foot brake to slow down. I noticed that my mileage during the day was, say, 27 mpg but the day before driving normally (keeping the car in Drive while braking) got me a day of, say, 45 mpg. Others noted that the car does not shut the valves and get in to EV mode when braking and sometimes there was no brake regen. This was great to learn.

But if you can experiment for yourself and for others and post that daily then that might be a nice change from time to time. Maybe come home from a client by the Interstate at 65 mph but the next day come home all side roads and see if the FE raises or drops or test things and report on it (drafting, pulse-and-glide, etc.).

I see you had some good days with short trips of 60 mpg and 57 mpg. I'd like to know the conditions for those trips (mostly downhill?). I don't mind seeing all the numbers but it is always only showing partial work. For example, if you start and end at the same elevation (same location) each day then your elevation gain and loss is equal. If you are only tracking your mileage between client sites but not the two large uphills from your place to the client's first site and then from the last site to your place then your daily FE will be phenomenal.

What I do is write down my daily miles starting from home and ending at home and the resulting FE. Are you doing this or are you only reporting the trips from workplace to workplace? Can you give us not only the daily trip numbers but your Overall Tank FE at the end of the day as well? This is helpful for some of us.

Remember that I installed winter tires on 10/24 so these numbers are all shown with the winter wheels and Blizzak tires and I can STILL get days over 100 miles and above the EPA numbers. I had the Engine Block Heater installed at the end of 11/09 so 11/10 is the first day with the heater installed though that day had an average temp of about 65 deg while the days before were a little colder so don't think that a heater increases your FE by 5 mpg - it was just a nice day for a change.

What I like seeing is from 11/07 to 11/08 where the tank already has 407.2 miles on it at 48.2 mpg but the next day of only 62.9 miles STILL can raise the overall tank FE up 0.7 mpg to 48.9 mpg. If you round the numbers then a "short" 60-mile day raised my tank FE from 48 to 49 mpg. Nice.

But if you give us the daily Tank FE (or the other Trip meter) then we'll know if those short 60 mpg segments really raised your tank FE or if you ended your client site logging 40 miles from home and the next 40 miles were uphill thus reversing the great numbers you just posted. Just curious.

Here are the last few days of my own log:

basically, i'm just applying what i learned in tarabell's article. first run of the day is usually lower cuz of engine temp, and things generally get better as day progresses and engine temps improve. there's always an up-slope involved when i'm in the 30s, and long runs in the 50s or 60s usually involve a down-slope. last run of day is toward home, so i drive with extra special attn to fe (slow), which is usually higher than my other runs, in general.
add: have yet to produce those elusive 5 bars of ev-assist, but i'm looking for it.
add: i think the nature of my runs, lots of short runs with long periods of cooldown in btwn, will preclude me from getting the big fe numbers others are making, but i hope i'm wrong. eagerly awaiting the post-breakin boost i've read about. i'm at about 2100 total miles right now.

But can you post the temps for the day (guess at average or starting temp and ending temp)? I know that in another month I would be pleased to see 45 mpg by the END of the day while that might be your worst FE at the beginning of the day. That will show us the difference between 58 degrees for you in SoCal to 18 degrees for me. Or give the forecast when it is rain or nasty wind - wait - San Diego? Nevermind telling when it is bad weather then ... just when it snows. <smirk>

Ouch. With temps in the low 70s that is almost a "take the car to the dealer" day. I, on the other hand, had a larger-than-normal mileage day. I finished with 241 miles on the day at 50.9 mpg with temps between 43 F - 45 F in dry conditions and one snow tires. Woo-hoo.

The commute to the office was 22 miles and that resulted in about a 48 mpg readout. From there was the 85-mile jaunt to the first call (with elevations ranging from 900 feet starting to 1,450 feet in the middle to 1,200 feet at the end near Clarion, PA along I-80). I arrived at 106 miles and 50.9 mpg - neat how that is the same as the end of the day average but bizarre too. From there it was 109 miles back to Pittsburgh and I then had 212 miles at 51.8 mpg. Almost all highway but temps in the mid-40s. What a difference longer trips make instead of short 10-mile runs.

my first run was uphill and hurried, a knockout combo for fe. you are so right about the longer trips.

Matt - What do you do that only nets you 5 or 6 short 5-10 mile trips per day? I do the same 5 trips for work but in repqiring computers I end up driving an average of 100-150 miles a day though some days that is 50 miles and some days like yesterday are over 200 miles.
