Exclamation Ran 06 FEH out of gas

Was aware that is was low on fuel while driving the 06 to the gas station to fill it up. The engine shutoff and the red dash light came on indicating problem. The vehicle slowed to 30 mph and the electric drive took over. Ran it on batteries to the station, approximately 2 miles.

Has anyone do this besides us?

I came pretty close to it once. It took 15.5 gallons to fill it so I was only half a gallon away from complete empty. It's nice to know we can limp along at least a couple of miles to a station!

You guys are pushing it to the hilt with 15.5 gallons. One thing I learned filling up my tank is that once you get an over flow of gas, you can slowly add a half gallon more as the neck drains down again to a true top off. I have never put 15.5 gallons in at a time though. Has anyone got over a 600 MTE reading?

Yes, people have run out of gas, in fact one guy ran out of gas twice. It's really, really, not recommended, and unlike drafting, you really shouldn't do it.

That guy... am I.

However, I did learn quite a lot from those experiences. Aside from the obvious - not trying to use every last gallon when you're out in the middle of nowhere, I learned what happens, how the vehicle reacts, how actual "empty" relates to 0MTE, etc.

But the best thing I learned is that the Ford Roadside Assistance plan that comes free for 3yrs/36k mi is really excellent. They take very good care of you, quickly and efficiently. Both times it happened I was way out there, but the RA network goes deep and they were able to dispatch help from tiny places that are hard to even call towns.... little desert outposts is more like it.

If I am not mistaken, the fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel. That is not an inexpensive issue. I would definitely not run it out of fuel.

The fuel is also what "cools" the fuel pump. Constantly running the tank close to empty supposedly shortens the life of the fuel pump. But, that sounds like just a theory. I never really seen/read anything that's done any serious testing on it.

Somebody did run an FEH out of gas, claims red light came on, car slowed to 30 MPH, and went 2 miles in EV mode:
