With variable valve timing, there are a lot of possibilities.
And even more exciting, I think Porsche is working on electronically positioned valve. That would allow dynamic selection of valve opening and closing.

That is the holy grail for ICEs! Current variable valve timing implementations just retard or advance the cam a few degrees. Being able to control the valves electronically would allow elimination of the throttle butterfly. Cost and reliability are holding it back.
