My 09 feh has the canister style.

My buddy has a later production date 09 feh with a spin on filter.

Are they interchangeable?

I woult rather have the spin on, less mess, less hassle.

 

Actually the canister, to my surprise is the easiest cleanest change I've ever done.
The "secret" is the drain screw in the bottom of the canister which allows it to be drained prior to removing the canister proper. More Hassle?

 

spin it off, spin it on vs spin it off, dump it out, remove filter, change orings (careful with this task), put new cartridge in, reinstall canister.....yes, more hassle.

 

Not to mention that the spin-ons are cheaper-guess it is because they sell millions of them. But I don’t think that we can replace our canister with spin-ons without an adapter as the mounting style is completely different.

 

Next time I have the cannister off, I will have to look up and see if there is a smooth surface and/or a threaded section to spin the filter on to.

 

Cheaper perhaps, hassle? Don't you have to dump out the oil in the spin on? The canister drains from a hole in the bottom, considerably less mess, Not only that but more environmentally friendly since no metal to dipose of! If your concerned with the hassle bring it to jiffy lube!

 

I don't find the canister filter to be less hassle at all. Sure it's got a drain plug which is made out of butter and quickly wants to loose the flats of it's allen recess. Ok, I can still get mine removed but I figure it's just a matter of time. Then there is the fact that You never get all of the oil to drain out of that plug, at least it never does for me. Doesn't seem to matter how long I wait. When I remove the filter holder (?) oil always spills around it's circumference. Now this would happen with a spin-on, too, but then I wouldn't have to wipe it down so I could put it back after I pried off and removed the stupid o-rings. Oh yeah, one more thing. I've found that the filter housing has a decided tendency to leak. Some filters seem to do better than others presumably because of the supplied o-rings. This is all on my '06 so I can't really speak to the other model, but I assume it's similar if not the same.
