Default 18F Tav drop while at work

Winter days can chill the hybrid battery. Arrived at work (6F) with a 53.6F Tav and left work (17F) with 35.6FTav.

My battery temp was 23°F today and when I got home from work my coolant temp was 75°.

Today was the first day in many where the high was above zero. Outside temp is currently +11° and rising and next week should have temps approaching 40° so I'm happy.

Exclamation Really cold battery

I recently had a really long cold soak. 2 weeks parked. Below zero degrees at night.

I went to start at +4 degrees F outside and the Tav was also +4'F.

The FEH started, but noticeably slower.
The engine didn't go up to the normal 1000 RPM in the usual 0.4 seconds.
The engine was spinning a few 100 rpm and the engine "cranked" for 3-4 seconds like a traditional vehicle before starting... but did start and then ran smoothly.

Only at 4'F the battery was too cold to charge. It was also too cold for the "warm up strategy" of repeated charge/discharge. If I "floored it" I could get some battery assist. But no regen, and the FEH would not charge while at a stoplight. Only once the battery got past 20'F then the regen and everything went back to normal, and I think the warm-up strategy was starting to resume, but about at that time I arrived where I was going and shut the car off again.
