Here's An In-Depth Look At Hyundai IONIQ 5

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the first of 23 electric-only vehicles the company intends to launch by 2025.

Earlier this year, Korean automaker Hyundai announced its elaborate electrification strategy. The company revealed that it intends to launch 23 electric-only models by the year 2025. The automaker will use its all-new IONIQ sub-brand to introduce several battery-only models, and it is kicking things off with the 2022 IONIQ 5. In a recent Asian Petrolhead video, Charlie Min gets behind the wheel of the new Korean EV.

The car piloted by Min was a single motor rear-wheel-drive variant and came equipped with an augmented reality head-up display. The futuristic crossover also gets rearview cameras instead of conventional mirrors, which Hyundai offers as optional extras. According to Min, IONIQ 5 offers good visibility thanks to its large windows, vision roof, blind alert, and lane monitoring system.

Min offers a breakdown of the different IONIQ 5 variants, “We only have a single motor in this IONIQ 5 producing about 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. He further adds, “it pulls nicely in Sports mode, and you can really feel the difference between each drive mode, and this electric motor, the instant torque is very addictive, and I cannot wait to show you the IONIQ 5 with a dual-motor system which produces about 605 Nm (446 lb-ft) of torque.”

IONIQ 5’s dashboard is dominated by a pair of 12.3-inch touchscreens, which act as the instrument and infotainment displays. The cabin also gets what Hyundai calls the “Universal Island,” which is essentially an adjustable center console that offers a flat floor, and additional space for the front passengers. The car also comes with laminated windows for the rear passengers and Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability. With V2L, customers can use IONIQ 5’s battery pack to run electrical appliances.

Min also highlights an exceptional feature of the IONIQ 5, “We also have paddle shifters, not for gear changes, but to change the intensity of regen brakes. You can choose among 0,1,2,3, and one more i-PEDAL (different regen levels), which will make this IONIQ 5 come to a full stop. So, in theory, if you’re really careful, you can drive this IONIQ 5 using just one pedal.

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 also gets 800V charging capability, which can recharge the car’s battery pack from 10% to 80% capacity in just 18 minutes, and drivers will get 62 miles of range from just 5 minutes of charging. Overall, Hyundai’s new battery-powered crossover seems like an impressive product, and according to Min, IONIQ 5 even manages to offer a more comfortable ride than Tesla Model Y thanks to its 5-link rear suspension.
