The way this works, or doesn't work as the case may be, is kind of weird. After getting into the car with the phone, the phone auto-connects to the car (as it should). If I hit the voicedial button on the phone, the phone displays the menu on the phone and the display acts like it's waiting for me to say something, but the phone doesn't say "say a command" out the earpiece. The car doesn't say "say a command" either. It's like the phone thinks it's connected to an earpiece, but the car doesn't think it's an earpiece yet.

However, if I dial a phone number on the phone, as soon as I hit send, the car connects to the call and goes handfree.

What I want to happen, is when I hit the command button on the phone, I want it to engage the handsfree on the car and say "say a command" through the handsfree.

Verizon's Treo Talks to Toyotas
Here's some welcome news on the Bluetooth front: Verizon Wireless has
finally released a software update that fixes one of the more annoying
compatibility glitches with its version of the Palm Treo 650
smartphone. I wrote about this in Help File back in April.

Essentially, a Verizon Treo 650 would be unable to finish the "pairing"
process necessary for it to use Toyota's or Lexus's Bluetooth hardware
as a hands-free kit. There was no hardware fault to blame for this;
other carriers' Treo 650s had included the required software fix for
months already.

About two weeks ago, Verizon caught up to them. After waiting a week or
so to see if other users had reported widespread problems, I applied
this updater to my own 650. The software-upload process was the usual
annoying routine of first backing up the Treo's data, then wiping its
memory--required to free up enough memory for the updater--running the
updater, then reloading all my data.

But at the end of the process, the 650's Bluetooth finally worked as
advertised, pairing up successfully with the Bluetooth gear in our own
Toyota Prius. And whaddyaknow, this option is really convenient! With
the phone and car linked via Bluetooth, an incoming caller's number
shows up on the Prius's central display; when I press the phone-answer
button on the steering wheel, the stereo pauses and I can carry on the
conversation using the car's own speakers and microphone. Much more
convenient than trying to fish the phone out of a pocket, then hold it
to my head or activate its own speakerphone function.

I can also beam over address-book entries from phone to car, then dial
them with a press of a button on the Prius's screen. The only catch is
the Toyota software's limit of one phone number per contact; I'll have
to edit the 650's address book temporarily before sending over the
numbers for the people I call most often.

I've had this Treo 650 for almost a year and a half, but this is the
first time I've had a good reason to keep its Bluetooth function
enabled.

At least the TCH will support two phone numbers per Name and create additional Name entries for numbers more than two.
Does the patch enable signal strength and battery level indicators?

 

I had the same problem with Verizon and OBEX. I did extensive research and found out the same thing. Crippled Bluetooth. Speaking with a few people, I did find out that there may (or may not) be a pending class action lawsuit against Verizon. The Treo and the Q have OBEX unblocked.

I did confirm will Alltel that this feathure is unlocked. I ultimately decided not to presue it, but I suggest buying a v710 or v815 on ebay with Alltel software, then transfer your address book with verizons connectivity kit. Should work, I have not tried.

The other solution is to go to a Sprint / Nextel reseller service center and get frindly with there computer geek see if they have a bluetooth phone that they are willing to load up with you address book, again I asked but did not try to do this.

The time I have spent to outsmart Verizon, I could have manually keyed my entire book. I have done my top 50, and in 4 months, I only need to dial one manually. I gave up, if there is a class action, I will gladly join it.

Why join a class action? They aren't a monopoly, and I know for a fact that there are other carriers who DON'T lock their customers' bluetooth like that. Really, if all the fed up people complained and CANCELED their service, I bet Verizon would pay attention. (OK, they may not do anything different, but at least they'd notice.)

 

Some more info. I called Verizon Corporate offices, they said it was Motorola, I called Motorola, they first asked the carrier, when I said Verizon they said it is then and OBEX and they they told me about the pending Clas action. I called back Verizon and they said future models may eliminat the block. In factt aerly Razr phones inadvertantly had it unblocked. Why Class Action, just to cost them lots of money, I do not expect anything. The last one would have netted me twenty bucks, if I had not washed the phone before it was settled.

I can't leave Verizon, it is the only decent service in my region, and almost all of my employess are on this service with the In-network.

About canceling, Verizon charges $175. if still in contract. If you have changed your plan, it usually extends your contract, very few changes do not, same tier of plans, but they ofter chande the tiers.
