Toyota to Recall 3.8 Million Vehicles

Re: Toyota to Recall 3.8 Million Vehicles
This is a minor issue but once there's an indication that it may have cost a family their lives, especially with the circumstances (being on the phone for help when it happened), obviously Toyota has to make their cars even more "idiot-proof" to try to compensate for any possible way owners, drivers, or random shifting might act to shift the mats in a way that could cause a problem. They can't afford not to, especially between the press they'll get and the litigious nature of American society these days.

Unintended acceleration occurs in other brands, too.
I conducted an informal survey (I asked a handful of friends with non-Toyota cars if their floor mats shifted).
All said that it did (or could, if not secured properly).
This is not a Toyota specific issue (IMHO).

Re: Toyota to Recall 3.8 Million Vehicles
I didn't say it was, but until someone else has a highly-publicized crash attributable to this "known issue", they have little pressure to worry about for issuing recalls. Rest assured, if something like this came up in a Ford, Nissan, GM, or anybody else, they'd be the ones making a major recall. And I bet right now they're all already looking very closely at their own mat construction/installation to figure out how likely it is they'll ever have a problem.

This time, apparently, a CHP officer and his family were involved, fatally. Now suddenly the problem is legitimate and worthy of a recall.
Just the way it goes I suppose.

Re: Toyota to Recall 3.8 Million Vehicles
Hello
Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced today a major Safety Recall involving 134,900 Yaris units. The Toyota Yaris recall refers to vehicle sold in the United States and built from 2006 through 2007.
The Toyota Yaris is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pensioners that retract the seat belts in case of a crash. The reason for this Toyota Yaris recall is that the pretension er deployment may affect the sound insulating foam in the center pillar, following a collision.
Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Safety Recall notification via first-class mail beginning in early February.

I wondered if the sound insulation is catching fire or smoldering... weird.

Re: Toyota to Recall 3.8 Million Vehicles
Has anyone experienced sudden acceleration in their TCH? Night line had a segment this week where a number of Toyota TCH and Prius owners did not have mats installed and they claim the electronic throttle control module is at fault. The mat issues may be a smokescreen.

A new recall was announced, please see this thread.
Just a suggestion, but to prevent duplicate postings and confusing threads, it's best to discuss the floor mat issues in this thread and (since it's a separate item) the pedal recall in the other thread.
