Long time reader and first time posting. Today i gonna share a secret with all of you since you touch base on synthetic oil that i have been doing so much reading in the pass few years.

I currently owned 2007 Camry Hybrid (white) 1998 Honda Civic LX with 330k. My secret on this car is synthetic oil. I still outrun so many cars with my Civic even with high mileage. Not just any synthetic oil. They said Mobil 1 is the best. No one can beat them. THEY ARE WRONG!!!!

AMSOIL is the best. I have facts to proof it. Here is a website that has comparison with all the major synthetic oil. Amsoil came out top.

Amsoil also guarantee that when you use them, it will last 1 year or 25000 miles equivalent to 40,233 km. Why you say? They are far more superior. Sure they cos a little more but think of it this way. Change oil once a year??? that is the best deal ever. I have been using Amsoil 5w30 on my civic for the past 2 years ever since i know about amsoil. It does wonder. I save a lot of gas as i travel around GTA a lot. Last time my mechanic check my engine, he said i never seen such clean engine before. Your car will for that mileage is running very well. I just bought Toyota Camry Hybrid and went through the first oil change with the dealer. I was disappointed when i found out they put crap oil in my car. So, my next oil change will be going back to my good old friend Amsoil with my mechanic that i know long time ago.

that will explains everything you need to know. I also know with Amsoil oil filter it will be much better. There is however one problem with Amsoil. It is hard to find. Everytime i go to Canadian tire. The guy always say. Of of Stock. I shouldn't be telling you guys this cos everyone will be fighting with me for this oil now. You got to be a friggan dealer!!! Now I am also a dealer but do not post that kind of propaganda as it will get you in deep do-do on any of these sites. Like my ma's better than your ma just does not cut it on any public site, just like hobil 1 lol, they don't even use it for road tar anymore ROTFLMAO!!

 

BEWARE: cost of engine lube. actually not a Hybrid owner yet. purchased 09' Lexus LS460L 2 months ago. averaged 29mpg on long distance driving recently. proud of that w/such a heavy car

subject is the synthetic engine oil that I was unaware of the requirement. dealer charges just over $8.00 a quart for this. $199.00 for oil change. Good grief!! I thought the service writer was mistaken on just what I had wanted done to my car. will find alternative, I will show up w/ my own lubricant purchased elsewhere

 

Best to shop around. My dealer charges $24.99 (which surprised me, as I had expected it to be a lot more). I used to go to Firestone with my other cars but in this case dealer is cheaper.

 

Honda also offers an OW20 oil through it's parts department. For me it is very simple and reliable to pickup the required bottles of oil, and a replacment washer for the drain plug (and oil filter as required, at every other change) through the parts department.

I've gone back to doing my own oil changes. It's more convenient for me, I actually enjoy doing it, and I don't get nickeled-and-dimed by the service department, with their "shop supply" extra charges.

Plus, I don't have to battle with them over their "interpretations" of the service schedule. For example: Honda stipulates to change the oil filter at every other change. At least here in west coast Canada, any dealer I've had relations with practically insists on filter changes at every oil change. Trying to hold them "to the letter" of the maintenance schedule they treat you like a car abuser, LOL.

One compromise that works for me with the filter change at every other oil change: at the oil-change-without-filter-change, take the filter off, drain it and reinstall it. This has worked for me without incident, ie: the filter still seats ok, no leaks. This gets that last cup or so of old oil out, but extends the filter use per the maintenance schedule.

The price compared to Mobil 0W20 is on par or a little better. Also, making one purchase at the parts department, getting just what you need (plus or minus a bottle), is good for the paper trail: you can put one receipt in your records binder (you should keep one), and the note the date/mileage on it.

I find it very handy to maintain a text format log as well, fwiw.

 

Checked with a dealer by my house and the 0W-20 synthetic oil is $5.49 a quart. Filters were $5.45 if I remember correctly. Mobil1 is runnung $6.97 a Walmart. Toyota filters on Ebay are $38.00 a case w/free shipping. Looks like I will be trying the dealer for oil and Ebay for filters. The last filters I purchased on Ebay were $33.00 a case.

 

I use mobil one 0W-20 full synthetic oil in my TCH. I read the 0W can increase the gas mileage about 1 1/2 to 2 mpg over the 5W. I buy the toyota filter from our local dealer. I do my own oil changes.

 

I have used Mobil1 0W-20 also in my TCH. I switched to 5W-20 synthetic for the summer months and will be changing back to the 0W-20 the next change for the winter.

I have always done my own oil changes also. Just don't trust the "other guy" to do it, I've heard too many horror stories. I know it's right if I do it and have never had an internal engine problem in 35 years.

 

I read somewhere that the 0W has a higher film strength than the 5W. The local toyota tech talked me into the OW as it's designed more for the hybrids. It gets up into the valvetrain quicker. I was worried about the 100 to 105 degree heat here in the desert. He said no problem, the 0W will protect from -53F to +400F degrees. I have used it now for 2 years in my TCH and have had no problems at all. In fact the engine seemed quieter after I did my first oil change to the OW.
