Default First service question

I had my Camry in for its first service recently. The service techs did mention that the first oil change would be free and they also asked if I wanted the tires rotated. I decided to do the tire rotation, so they indicated that all I would be paying for would be the tire rotation. The total service charge came to around $17. To me, that seems to be a lot especially since the oil change was not supposed to be included on the bill.

Just wondering if anyone else had the same type of service done and what the total cost was.

I'm assuming you didn't buy the pre-paid maintenance plan? Most likely the "free" oil change was to get you back in to the dealer, and then they would hit you up on the other 'recommended' tasks - tire rotation and fluid top off.

My (ex )dealer offered an "auto for life" program where they would cover the drivetrain for as long as you own the vehicle - so long as you have EVERY BIT OF REPAIR AND SERVICE PERFORMED BY THEM. Not a bad deal if they were a "customer service" oriented type of dealership. But, just have one oil change done somewhere else - for whatever reason - (even under the toyota PPM plan) the deals off.

From my findings, the pre-paid plan gives you the general service every 5K like oil, filter, fluids, tire rotation, inspection stuff. I was told though it does not cover the other "recommended" items (such as fuel injection cleaning, etc) that is recommended - but not part of the plan.

Hope this helps.

After closer inspection of the service ticket, it appears that they also did a fluid top-off, but then that has been a standard service that has been performed at any dealer that I have taken any of my previous cars to. The services performed were tire rotation, fluid top-off, and oil change. It would appear that the $17 amounts to a partial labor charge for something that takes only five minutes to perform, that is, a fluid top-off and tire rotation. I guess I now have to say that I had a $17 tire rotation done. Since I have to back to the dealer anyways to follow up on other things, I suppose that I can ask about the service charge.

The $17 tire rotation really isn't anything new in parts of NY. We have a number of dealers around here that will always give you a few oil change but you have to pay $20 for a tire rotation. Compared to the price of the synthetic oil, that isn't a bad deal.

$17 for a rotation and fluid top-off is on the low end of what I'd expect here in Northern Virginia.

I just went to the Dealer today to see if they would re-program the passenger side seat belt chime. A 5 minute task (at the most), and they wanted to charge me $95 for thier "tech" time with the machine.

Needless to say I'll keep riding wiht the seat belt buckled for now and write the Dealer a letter about trying to gouge me for such a minor thing. I would expect that I'd pay something - but a full hours worth of time is a rip off. Rosner Toyota of Stafford, and originally they said they could & would not program it out because it's a safety issue. Thier tune changed after I HAD TO SHOW THEM in the owners manual that it could be done and was o.k.

Heck, they didn't even have an owners manual to reference - they asked for mine!
