it can be done relatively quickly, even though it's not a perfect system.
My real complaint is that it takes three button-pushes to do what could be done in one: Push the speech button, and say "Call John". The system should respond with a confirmation, and as long as it got it right you do nothing further, and it dials. IF it got it wrong, you hit the speech button again and try again before it starts dialing.

I don't have NAV but voice commands for my phone work just fine. What I've been reading here supports my decision to go "navless".

Yeah, I just confirmed that I must wait for her to finish speaking (with NAV). For example, if I have to gotten to the point where she is saying "...press the off-hook button to dial or say dial after the beep..." I can hit the off-hook button all I want and hit the voice button all I want and she will just keep talking -- ignoring me.

So, non-NAV is like having a girl friend...she listens to you and you can interrupt her without problems. She let's you drive without harassing you every few minutes.
The NAV version is like having a wife...she completely ignores what you have to say and you have to wait for her to finish talking, even though it's the same thing over and over again and you know exactly what she's going to say before you say it! She is constantly telling you what to do "Turn here", "Make a U-turn"

$1500..trust me, pal, you'll need to add a few zeros!
The only advantage of the NAV-version is (as long as you are alone), you can take out your frustrations on your wife.
Her "Turn here"
You "Shut up!"
Her "You missed the turn, make a U-Turn"
You "Yeah, I know, I did that on purpose! I want to visit my old girlfriend's neighborhood"
etc...

plus the ability to turn the volume down...all the way to zero!

Funny! My dad who will be 77 this year calls my mom his NAGIVATOR! Funny thing is she laughs about it. They have been married over 54 or 55 years or so now. Like my grandma used to say" That's a long time to feed someone else's kid!"
