Default 2009 Hybrid Camry Stalling/Transmission Issues

Hello, new to the forum,

Looking for some assistance please.
My son has a 2009 Camry Hybrid with only 68K.
Car is in great condition, have not had any issues since we purchased a year ago.

Last week, my son was driving and said he heard a loud popping noise from the rear of the car, like someone hit the car.

The car stalled out while driving @ 20mph, Check VSC, Check Hybrid system, service engine soon light came on, and the traction warning light.
Car took three attempts to get it started, then proceeded to stall 3 more times while driving home.
Started the car the next morning, all warnings were gone and car drove as normal.
20 minutes later, same deal - stalling - lights on dash and warnings
This time though when it was restarted, the car would move at 1mph or nothing(like the trans was shot).
Then after a few minutes, the car would go into gear and start moving again.

Took the car to my nearest Toyota dealer and they did a $130 diagnostic check.
Received a call this morning that the car needs a new transmission and the cost was

only 7,000 dollars.
Was informed that they cannot repair the transmission, they have to replace it.
Service advisor said normally these cars are very reliable, only have seen this issue twice in 15 years...
Codes off of diagnostic report were P0A78(Drive Motor "A" inverter performance) and P0A90 -( Drive Motor "A" performance)

A thought from another forum that it might be the invertor coolant pump/ clogged line..

Had it checked, pump and coolant are good

So what to do now...
Obviously I am not spending 7K at the dealer to replace the trans.
So can the transmission be repaired and what is the cost of this repair?

Any repair shops in NJ/Hudson County that may have the knowledge to further diagnose/repair?
Looking for some guidance/suggestions -anyone else have this issue?

Thanks in advance

These are nothing like any other transmission, and only about 1-2% of cars on the road have this type. Little motivation for the aftermarket to learn it.

Pay an independent shop to install a trans from a salvage yard. Common with the Prius and tends to run about $1500

The though from another forum was that MG is overheating and system shuts down. As it cools, it returns back to normal function.
Possibly, due to inverter coolant pump malfunction or else poor MG cooling.

Dumb speculation. If an MG is overheating, it's because it's failing. Inverter coolant pump has nothing to do with MG cooling and the only thing that cools the MG is the tranny fluid.

The other possibility is a failed inverter, but you can't know without the detail codes associated with the DTC. I trust the dealership can properly decode the detail codes, but that is an assumption, and I've been wrong before.

Brought the car home from a local shop this morning, Car stalled at a red light switching from motor power to hybrid..Car though started right back up and no problems with transmission shifting into gear.
Check Hybrid system message came up along with the service engine soon/traction alert.. The Check VSC alert didn't come on...If this is a failed inverter issue, could this be the reason the car is just stalling out?
But then again it doesn't explain why the trans works and then sometimes it does not..At this point, I really do not know what to do with this car..

A rough count of detail codes shows that there are 18 different detail codes associated with P0A78, which basically means there are 18 different reasons this code can arise (18 failure points). Almost all of them include Transaxle and Inverter as sources. Both can cause all symptoms described.

Here's a dump of all the P0A78 detail codes and their likely causes. Most detail codes include additional confirming actions for diagnosis or reference other codes present for pinpointing the issue.
