Why am I tailgated so often?
Here in NJ if you pass someone you could get shot,
if you are driving too slow you could get shot,
if you beep your horn at someone driving too slow you could get shot,
if someone beeps their horn at you while driving slow they could get shot,
if someone is beeping and driving fast they can get shot,
if you are stopped and beeping you could get shot or you can shoot someone else,
good luck

Let me ask you this, if it was a 5 or 6 lane (across) freeway what lane would you be going the speed limit in? I agree that on a 3 lane freeway you should be in the right lane if you are going the speed limit. That is why you are getting tailed. Of course, you'll probably get tailed in the right lane going the speed limit too... However, it is the safest for someone traveling the speed limit to travel in the right most lane.
That said, when people tail me I am one that tends to do a "brake check", esp. when I am already running 5-10 miles per hour over the speed limit. That almost always gets them off your bumper and if it doesn't I will slow down to 10-15 miles per hour under the speed limit.

Here in NJ a break check on the highway will get you one of two things. Either you get shot or someone in a stolen car will rear end you.
If you are on a cell phone and someone beeps they can shoot you.
If you are shooting and driving someone can shoot you also.
If you have a woman in the car and someone looks at her, she may shoot you.
You can shoot someone if their woman looks at you,
If everyone is going the speed limit and no one is shooting, somethings wrong.

But I've realized that there's a period before morning rush hour where traffic moves very smoothly and quite fast......this is when the speeders all tries to beat the inevitable gridlock that's coming when everyone else pours out onto the roads all at once. At this point you should keep up with traffic (or at anytime when rush hour is steadily moving) if you want to avoid road confrontations.
However if there's plenty of space and open lanes, not rush hour, etc...then they are just being dicks.
People do that in the middle lane. It is the caravan of the stupid who don't want to drive. They create a long line-up in the middle lane, bisecting the highway which causes an impediment to other traffic.
Stick to the right except to pass and drive consistently and predictably (including maintaining a constant speed).

If he's putting along at 60mph in the 2nd lane to the right, it's easy for people to pass him in any lane. Your example of a caravan in this lane can apply to the right lane as well but with the chaos of people trying to enter or exit the ramps.
a better method is to swerve slightly (while staying in your lane). if your car can handle it, swerve hard. just don't lose control for real. everyone will back off, thinking you're on drugs or w/e.
just don't block the left lane. if someone wants to go 100 mph, you should move over.
When traffic is moving, the average seems to go just about speed limit. That's a change. It used to average about 10 miles per hour above speed limit. As always, there are some who want to go far faster than everyone else, and some who want to go 40 no matter what. But I'm sure the average speed has slowed down since the price of fuel has gone up.
Even so, when traffic is moving, I generally stay near the right. The right-most lane is usually an exit-only lane around here. The second-from-right usually continues past the exit, but is often congested by merging traffic. The third-from-right usually has consistent speed, and leaves two or three lanes on the left for faster traffic.
I wonder what sort of MPGs a full-size conventional SUV gets in stop-and-go traffic between 0 and 30 miles per hour?
