Good for them!

Nice to see that they already get about a third of their energy from renewable sources. Maybe some of the more primitive countries will see this and pay attention?

I recently read that Iceland has a similar plan. They happen to be a small country with a huge geothermal energy source however.

I suppose "cool" is too obvious for Sweden and Iceland's decision.

Any country that moves away from oil will be at a spectacular economic advantage over other countries.

Oil can only get more expensive. Renewable can only get cheaper. Every investor and manufacturer in the world will want to produce where energy costs are predictable and low - I think Sweden is onto an economic winner here.

I imagine Denmark is wishing they could "abandon all oil", now

Something is not right about this article...

Reading the major swedish newspaper sites (http://www.svd.se & http://www.dn.se) I see no mention of this.

Also the article in the Guardian seem to speak more about providing alternatives then to abandoning oil if you read this quote

"Our dependency on oil should be broken by 2020," said Mona Sahlin, minister of sustainable development. "There shall always be better alternatives to oil, which means no house should need oil for heating, and no driver should need to turn solely to gasoline."
So I think this is just a play for the galleries...

To bad, for a second it made me vroud to be Swedish...

Well,

I read them most every day (it's the country I'm from afterall) and I haven't seen ANY discussion like this going on. So whatever it is it's not a major move. I'll ask my parents (who live there) if they've heard about it
