Toyota aiming to make hybrid systems cheaper
Toyota Motor Corp. could begin using a cheaper and smaller hybrid system as of 2008, a spokesman told the Asahi newspaper, which also reported that the company plans to more than double production of the fuel-sipping vehicles by then to 600,000 units a year.Since rolling out the world’s first gasoline-electric hybrid car in 1997, Toyota has improved the powertrain with a second-generation system it calls THS II, which powers the remodeled Prius and Lexus RX400h SUV, among others.

___Not only do I hope Toyota has succeeded in shrinking AND lowering the cost of THS while at the same time adding more power, I hope the new Camry Hybrid is equipped with the Third Gen system! If the above is true, they could leave the Prius’ 1.5L as the base propulsion and the FE of another 350 #’s would only knock her back by maybe 3 - 4 mpg. A Camry Hybrid with the third gen THS would be worth 56 - 57 City/45 - 46 highway. And at a lower cost then the Prius II was manufactured? That would wake up some auto exec’s from Detroit, Europe, and even Japan now wouldn’t it

What's the aerodynamic profile of the Camry versus the Prius? I would suspect it has both additional frontal area as well as a higher cd. Also, the Camry Hybrid will likely wear larger, higher drag tires than the Prius. I'm not sure they'd be able to make 50mpg, but I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

___You really have to get out and drive an Escape HEV and a Prius after proper setup. Both will shock you as to what they are worth in their particular extreme realms.
___EricGo, I know about the 08 MY stuff … The wish part is that some of the THS parts will supposedly be American sourced. Guess which Toyota hybrid will be American sourced next year? Wishful thinking of course
