Default Google philanthropy targets hybrid car development

One of the first projects of Google Inc.'s new philanthropic arm reportedly may be to work with scientists and auto makers to develop a plug-in hybrid car engine that uses ethanol, electricity and gasoline. The New York Times reported Thursday that Google's initial $1 billion philanthropic effort will be as a for-profit entity and will pay taxes. The company eventually wants to tackle such monumental problems as poverty, disease and global warming, according to reports.
