Wow, you got a car great at a great price. Do you live in PA or did you have to pick it up? Here's my Golden Bear...

I ended up paying $14,700 plus TTL which came out to $15,700. I've put about 1,000 miles on it since I've gotten it and I've loved every mile. I'm getting about 45.5 mpg.
There's a 2003 HCH on ebay that has over 80K on it. I asked the guy how it was running and he said it felt like it had 20k on it. I guess the battery will last over 80K, that's good news!!!

The transmission started failing without warning at about 57,000 miles - very severe jerking and surging one day. No warning lights... Took it in for service and after a day of looking at it, they called and said they had "good news and bad news."
Bad news was that the CVT was shot and needed replacement. Got a big lump in my throat when he said that...
Good news is that they had already contacted the "regional manager" and were going to do the replacement at no cost and give me a loaner for the couple of days it would take to fix. I asked what was wrong with it, and the service manager indicated that they "don't investigate that - they don't even take them apart, they just replace the entire thing."
Since it was free... I never investigated, but isn't the drivetrain covered longer than the 3/36 - wouldn't this be covered still? It would have been more impactful for me to have heard "isn't not under warranty, but we are going to replace it at no cost..." or "under your warranty coverage, we will replace it." Maybe someone on this forum can explain more about what might have gone on behind the scenes here?!?

Honda had a major fiasco with the automatic transmissions in their V6 models from 98-02. It's possible they've got some major problems with the CVT and rather than get stuck in another bout of litigation and recalls they figured it's cheaper to quietly just replace the failed units immidiately, without question, for free. I think you would be at least the 3rd person on this board who's had a CVT fail. Not really a good sign, actually.

Arrg. I hope thats not the case. According to this link http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...SMISSION+ASSY.. the transmission is $6K. thats just shy of 30% of the price of a new car.

Wow.. that's.. umm... about $5750 more than I could pick up a used manual transmission for. Well, yeah let's hope they just had a few isolated cases.
