masgian,
How do you guys check the pressure so accurately? How do you adjust the pressure? Do you carry a portable compressor?
I use a good quality digital tire pressure gauge, and I use a small portable light duty plug-in compressor at home. I also have a 12v compressor I keep in the trunk but really just a toy that I keep for emergency.

Both compressors have one of those analog dial type built-in gauges which are wildly inaccurate.

You're right, one can't just eyeball it with any accuracy.

I've picked up a nail/screw here and there and can tell if one is getting low. It seems like I'm driving through a sandbox.

Ok, maybe this is a noob question but the label on the inside of the door says 32 psi front and back for the 2006 hybrid. I know the tires say 44 psi. Why would Honda recommend such low PSI on their label? What are the drawbacks if any by not following Honda's recommendation? I see many hear with over 40 PSI. Is this safe for you and the car? Just confused why Honda recommends such low PSI.

manchild;

Short reply here if possible.

Honda is setting PSI for Ride & Noise with FE taken into consideration.

Hybrid High Mileage Members are going for the Number 1-Thing, MPG with everything else (Ride&Noise) taking Last Place at Best.

The manufacture sets the Maximum Safe Cold PSI on the tires. So if a Soft ride & less Tire Noise is not a big concern, set the tires (All-4) at the Maximum Cold Air Pressure. Which on mine is 44 PSI.

After a while you will get used to the ride and you will bump them up to 50 or 55
Thats about as high as you should go though. After that there is very little gain.

The tires burst rating is up over 100psi so that shouldn't be a concern.

So do you run them that high? If so, why is it that you only get 44.2 mpg? Mine are at 36 PSI and I get 47 mpg. Is it driving technique or is keeping the tires pumped overrated? I don't have much of a driving technique, I bought the car 2 weeks ago.
