I haven't had that problem, but I "googled" it. Some possibilities were that dust, pet hair, spilled soft drinks, etcetera could have gotten in beneath the cover on the shifter, making it more sticky over time.

Just took to dealer last week. Shifter cable was corroded. Payed $390. for expensive part and time consuming repair. Maybe I should have just had them lubricate and see how it went.
