Default Snow Tire Time!?!

Today the high is 72 degrees.

Friday the high is 38 with snow showers.

From then on it looks like the 40s and 50s for awhile with precip.

I usually wait til the first real snow and do all eight tires at once.

I think Friday may be the actual start of winter for Omaha. Ugh back breaking labor here I come.

I just mounted new snow tires on my '08 HCH II. I found a matching set of OEM rims and Dunlops with low mileage. I now have 8 matching all-seasons tires and 4 snow tires so I won't be looking for tires anytime soon!

I got a set of 205/60-15" H-rated snow tires which fit very well. The slightly lower profile seems to improve steering response. Being a little wider, they should provide more traction and also will protect the wheels from curb damage a little better.

According to my calculations, the overall diameter is 0.3" less than the standard 195/65 - 15 tires or 1.3%. Therefore, the effect on speedometer accuracy is minimal.

So far the effect on my mileage is slight but I had already noticed how the cooler weather was lowering my average. In this case, however, safety takes priority!

I don't envy Noflash doing 8 tire changes but having then mounted ready to go is very handy. Having a hydraulic floor jack and a level work surface helps a lot.

Cheers,

Roger

Narrow tires work better on snow and ice! If you can get the proper size installed, do it for your safety. Your tire dealer should know better!H.

Harold is correct that narrower is better, but 205 is still pretty narrow and you will be much, much safer in the snow with your setup. Tirerack promotes that size as an alternate so you're fine.

I do have a floor floor jack and I can't remember if it's the front or rear jack point, but one of them jacked high enough gets one whole side of the car off the ground, so that safes a little time, but it's a little more dangerous -- we'll see how I feel at the time.
