Default My Guide: How to get 1000 miles on a tank

1) Get a non-PZEV Civic HCH
Sorry, if you have a PZEV, your tank isn't big enough!

2) Fill up your car to the neck
Yes, so you can see the gas at the top.

Be confident that you now have 16 gallons

3) Reset your trip OD
You have to manage your driving!

4) Manage to get at least and indicated 66 MPG on the trip
Use all of the wonderful techniques provided on this web site! I was able to see an indicated 65.4 on my last tank, but use 66 as a safe rule of thumb if you are prone to worrying. 66 is NOT that hard to do if you know how to FAS, and the weather cooperates.

5) WAIT until your trip OD is at least 1000 miles!
IGNORE the low fuel light. It will only drive you crazy. The gas gauge gets wacky when the fuel is low. . . bars go up, bars go down.

6) Go to Step 2

Where on earth (Gaia) do you live? I am curious if anyone who lives/drives daily in a hilly/mountainous area can get 1K.

I live in Northern NJ in a very hilly (ie. not "mountainous") region. There are a couple of hills that I have to use my mechanical brakes on. Most of the hill are rolling though, so it actually reduces the number of FAS that I need to perform.

I have a one hour commute to work which is 40 miles, so my average speed is very compatible with high mileage. I rarely drive above 55. Additionally, I know the route very well, so I maximize the coasting/FAS to a tee.

From the glossary:

FAS
FAS is forced auto stop. This is the techique of rebooting the computer on the car to halt the engine.

Check out this thread as people more expert than I have documented this thoroughly:

https://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/...ghlight=reboot

BTW, 66mpg indicated isn't as easy as you think. Things like climate, environment (hills, trafic lights, etc.) Will be the bigest factors in whether or not you can get 66mpg indicated.

For MT:
  • Push Clutch in
  • Put car in Neutral
  • Release Clutch
  • Turn ignition off (one click)
  • Wait a full second (if you don't the engine will start again)
  • Turn ignition back on without starting the car
  • Coast until your hearts content
When you want to accelerate again:
  • Push Clutch in
  • Find appropriate gear for your speed and terrain
  • Release clutch
  • drive away

It might be easier on your car if you restart using the key inbetween these steps:

No kidding, not to mention commute. If I had an hour's drive below 55 twice a day I'd be flying but an 8-mile commute through downtown like I and several others have isn't exactly child's play for 60+ MPG.

I live in the foothills of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.....a very hilly topology. My record to date is 941 miles on a single tank.
Could likely have brought it over the 1K mark but chickened out.
