Hi Texashchman:

___Even with a std. load, an HCH at 60 + mpg is worth almost 800 miles! Honda advertises the HCH w/ a stick at 650 miles. With a hypermiler behind the wheel, Honda’s advertised range is ridiculously under reported.

Update: I am at 620 miles with the meter reading 59.8 mpg, and four bars.
(Why do I feel I am playing "name that tune"?)

You'd probably make it I just was concerned because the route I was taking to go home from work gas stations are few and far between.Kevin

4 bars with 80 miles go to. Piece of cake. You should get about 40 miles per bar.

My final reading for the tank was 732.5 miles, the display showed 59.8 mpg. The tank took 12.475 gallons with no top off (in NJ there is no self service, and the distribution techs just flip the switch when the pump automatically shut off).

BTW, I feel good

"distribution techs"

that's a good one!

congrats on your tank.
once again, the top half of my tank was looking good, then this nor'easter arrived and my mileage has been going down. oh well.... keep on trying.

KLCarch, i rolled into arco gas today with 559.9 miles on the odometer and 51.8 mpg showing (actual was 50.9 mpg). I filled exactly 11.003 gallons, which means there was only about 0.85 gallons remaining in the tank, barely enough to reach 600 miles.

41.1 miles away from our goal! hopefully i can raise my mpg to 54 next couple tanks so the 600 is attainable. It's getting hard as I don't want to raise tire pressure anymore because of longer braking distance, and going slower than 50 mph is a drag on my commute and the other people behind me trying to exit on the highway *cross fingers* it is getting warmer though, which helps

Hi Bluecivichybrid:

___Although an older report and using much lower pressures, you have to be careful about making general statements about longer stopping distances at higher pressures … If you have the HCH w/ the B381’s, max sidewall is 51 #’s and if I owned it, that would be the minimum I would be using!
Here are published numbers for Goodyear Tires with a Max Sidewall Inflation Pressure of 35 PSI for vehicles that 'recommend' a pressure below the maximum.

___I don’t know about the CVT and a 50 mph issue since I do not own one but I believe the HCH w/ a CVT is worth at a minimum 50 mpg at 55 mph when setup and in warmer temps. Add a few hypermiling tricks and you should have no problem …

Wayne,
I have a 2005 with B381's and my tires read: "max psi 44". which is what I'm running them at.
I've seen you post these stopping distance numbers before (thanks!). The first time I was especially relieved- as a brand new owner, who'd just read a bunch of posts about bad stopping and cornering if I raised my pressure to max psi. (was that too much of a dis-jointed sentence?)
anyway- do you think we could extrapolate to even better performance in wet stopping (or any) if the tires are at the recommended max psi?

Myles-
I was looking good for a while: 320 miles at the 1/2 tank mark on the guage and 53.3 tank mpg. (my best so far) Then the damm nor'easter showed up and it got cold and rainy. plus lately I'm doing alot of local (+/- 2 mile) trips and no longer trips to 'fix' my mileage-it's down to 49 now.......so not looking good. (I won't even go into my 3 month old car getting hit by a school bus while it was parked- major bummer )
I've been re-filling at 2 bars, which, looking back in my notebook usually gets me 10 gallons or a little under. I am going to try to go further into one bar and see where I get. use that last gallon!

later
Kate

xcel - b381s run max sidewall pressure at 44 psi, it's the dunlops that hot_georgia have that run 51 psi max

i have to disagree, i know my civic takes longer to stop since i raised its tires' pressure from 30 psi to 42 psi - i have to brake much earlier and much harder to stop in the same distance as before. While getting out of my friend's downhill driveway recently, i could not bring the car to a full stop at the bottom of his hill, and instead rolled out into the main road in the path of a (slowly) oncoming car. before i raised the tire pressure, i had no trouble stopping here.

i was driving the speed limit in both cases, 30 mph, and started braking after passing the same lamp post, the only difference was that I braked harder in the most recent case. my car and brakes are too new to factor in brake wear, and the low speed and two separate cases negates any possibility of brake fade. I dont think the temperature varied more than 10 degrees, and both were dry days on asphalt. in both cases, regen was working.

your numbers come from the nhtsa at this site
but the study was examining the effect of lower tire pressures on stopping distance, not higher tire pressures on stopping distance. the highest pressure they examined was at 35 psi, so i don't think the data you cited has enough data at higher pressures to say that higher pressures does not necessarily yield longer stopping distances

a cars.com article
says If tire pressure is too high, then less of the tire touches the ground. As a consequence, your car will bounce around on the road. And when your tires are bouncing instead of firmly planted on the road, traction suffers and so do your stopping distances. You’ll also feel a decrease in ride comfort.

i think it makes sense - higher inflation pressure = less surface area of the tire touching the road = less grip = longer stopping distance for the same braking conditions.
