Desertbriez, I found the photos of the Thule rack and hitch. They were originally posted by Sledge. Here are two of the photos. Looks pretty decent! Again, I can attest to how easy the rack is to use. Perhaps Sledge can comment on MPG impact???

 

I've thought about the Hidden-Hitch solution and I like it, but I'm not sure it's gonna fit my other half's Giant Revive DX:

 

You'd have to check with Thule on that, but I think it would work. The front wheel would sit in the wheel "cradle", the rear would rest on the sliding (adjustable for bike length) strap bracket. The only question would be the hook that pivots forward to latch onto the front wheel. Your front wheel is probably too small, but the hook might just secure to the long steering post on that bike.

My LBS (local bike shop), where I bought the rack, had one already set up and on display. If your LBS does the same, it could make it easy to see if it works or not!

We have a Yakima roof rack on our HCHII, but I have yet to put a bike on it--the Civic is my wife's car and I don't want my muddy/smelly biking buddies getting her car dirty. We used the rack for transporting skis this winter though and it worked well. The fit of the Yakima is quite good and it's very easy to remove when not in use (although it's easier for skis than bikes since the two bars aren't connected by a tray).

As mentioned, you will take a milage hit by putting your bikes on the roof, but even if you only get 40+mpg, it's still leaps and bounds better than the 17 you are getting now.
