Default 2005 Civic Hybrid AC removal?

I have a 2005 Civic Hybrid and have driven it 165000 carefree miles. 2 weeks ago my AC compressor failed. I had it checked out and was told it would cost about $1100 for a new compressor etc. With that kind of mileage I'm not inclined to replace the AC. My question is: Can I completely remove the compressor? It is making strange noises and I'm worried that it might jam at some point and do serious damage to the rest of the engine.
