As brick and others have hinted at, see if you can maintain a steady speed a lot more (difficult in LA - Yes). I start to work before rush hour to minimize accelerations and brakings - helps a lot.

A few more tips in stop and go traffic:
We don't have the traffic you have in L.A. but
Try to use the regen more than the braking.
Try to plan your route so that the bottlenecks are spaced together instead of intermingled.
For me this means alternate routes for going to work and leaving. Although it may add an additional 2 or 3 miles to the trip the MPG increase justifies it.
When planning your route, try to avoid the left turns if you can until your vehicle gets warmed up for autostop.
You'll find your groove, just hang in there.
Good luck
