I like to drive...and I plan on driving about 1000 miles per week...yes week, not month...so, I will be out of my 3/36000 and on to my 4/85000 warranty. Since most of my driving is hwy miles, I found that 65 mph gives me 62 mpg on average. I lose a LOT after 70 mph. I hyper mile when I can and will even get down to 55 mph on a 70 mph interstate..but I am always in the slow lane and always trucks that are in front or behind me hypermileing with me.
My best mpg so far on a 10 mile short trip was 72 mpg. the worst was driving in town with the AC on in crazy traffic. about 40 mpg. Don't think I ever had a 30-39 mpg over 10 miles..even with the AC on. Under a 10 mile trip...yeah, I expect to see my mpg in the 30's, but quickly goes up to the 50s and 60 on longer trips!

Huh? That's not quite true. It's not as simple as that.

I drive a hybrid for lots of reasons... Not only am I not putting as much CO2 in the air but I am also saving money on gas and lookin' good while doing it :-)
I read an article somehwere that said youd have to drive a hybrid 100,000 miles before you would make up the difference you pay in buying a hybrid in the first place (usually an extra $4000-6000 according to the article). I dont really believe thiswas caluclated with the current gas prices, and certaintly wont apply when they get ridiculous this summer.
Just yesterday gas jumped $0.09 in eau claire wisconsin where I am currently... With my old neon I used to feel the pit of my stomach drop when I saw that, but with a hybrid it isnt nearly as bad knowing I wont have to fill up nearly as frequently.

Oh and did you know that i paid over $ 45.000,-- for my HCHII.
Have a nice day and take your car for a spin now you still can.

BlueVFrank,
I think we are in a catch-up mode. Your standard of living is probably much higher than us, in other words you probably make much more in a year? So it probable all works out in the end. What part of the world are you living in? Cheers, H

Actually several reasons...
1. Fuel economy: 33 mile round trip 5 days a week; going from 18 Gal tank 2001 Ford Taurus at 24MPG to a 12 Gal tank 2008 HCHII at 50.4 MPG (and climbing)
2. Taurus had 93,300 miles, out of warranty and starting to need expensive repairs; HCHII has 6 year 100,000 mile warranty
3. Air pollution reduction using the AutoStop feature at lights and RR crossings
4. (And the MOST important reason: BECAUSE I WANTED ONE!!
