Default HCH is a compact and the Prius is a mid sized?

I've seen a number of places that say the Civic is considered a compact car while the prius is considered a mid-sized. Is this right?

If this is true it seems odd as the Civic is slightly longer and wider and weighs slightly more, although it isn't as tall.

According to 'Tom,' a NY Times blogger:
"Nobody really considers the Prius to be a mid-size car. I just looked it up on Edmunds.com, and they list it as a Compact. By EPA’s definition, the Prius barely squeaks into the “Mid-Size” category by virtue of its large trunk, since it’s a hatchback (EPA uses Psgr + Cargo Volume)."
Passenger volume for the Prius is 93.7 cubic feet. Passenger volume for the Civic is 90.9. Therefore, the Civic has just 3 percent less passenger volume than the Prius.
