code reader
OK, I used the search tool and found no discussion on code readers. If there is one, point me in the right direction. I have an older model reader that works on everything I use it on but my HCH ll. I'm guessing I need one that is also CANBUS; this one is not. What readers do you guys use? I've seen some on ebay for reasonable money, but want to make sure I get a good one, but not necessarily an expensive one.
I have two of these:

and Torque Pro for android, $6
Works great for both my '06 HCH2, a 95 Ford Ranger (this shocked me, but Ford had a partial implementation early), an '09 Fit and an '01 Alero.

I had forgotten about those that use bluetooth and your phone. I will get one. I have a '95 Jetta that is OBDl; should be interesting to see if it pulls codes from it, like it does on your Ranger. Thanks for the info Steve.
I have two because I like to keep one in each HCH2, and I can maintain vehicle profiles in Torque that specify the different adapters.
The free Torque is very functional, but once I upgraded to Pro, I can't believe how much better it is.
My understanding of why it worked in the Ranger is that the spec Ford used for that model was mostly OBDII compliant. I did a little Google-age on your 95 Jetta, and it looks like it's going to be hit or miss.
This is a Chinese knock-off of the more reputable units. There technically is no version 1.5, but both of mine have worked very well in the vehicles mentioned, and I would purchase again if I needed to replace them.
