Default "Brake System" light on

Our 2006 HCH has the Brake System light lit up on the dash. I've checked the basics (brake fluid level), and don't see anything wrong. Braking power is just fine, and in fact the car just passed the state safety inspection with this light on.

One other thing to note: The auto-stop is not working. This seems related. My current guess is that there is some problem with the regenerative breaking system, and with that the auto-stop does not work.

Any tips on how to troubleshoot and/or repair this problem? I took the car to the dealer and was told that they wanted to replace the master cylinder control module for ~$2500. I'm really hoping to narrow this down to something far cheaper...

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Go to O'Reilly and check the codes.

Really? Seems like "there is a problem with the brakes" is pretty much synonymous with "safety issue".

Did the Dealer tell you why they wanted to replace the "master cylinder control module"? One would hope that they read the codes to come to that conclusion.

There are no fault codes. I double checked again today, and no codes. Just the Brake System light, and no other symptoms.

No, I used the Torque Pro app with a WiFi OBD-II reader.

I suggested O'Reilly for a reason. Lots of codes that can't be read with cheap consumer stuff. The Bosch code readers O'Reilly uses are nearly as capable as the Bosch professional grade units.

Ok, thanks. We don't have O`Reilly around here, but I'll try Advance Auto or Auto Zone.

I have never been happy with Auto Zone's diagnostics. I can't recommend them at all.

Get the blink codes. My HCHI has an intermittent abs sensor error on one wheel that shows up that way but not with my OBDII code reader.
