2009 HCH - awful fuel economy. What to try next?
We bought our 2009 HCH with 50k miles on it and have had nothing but trouble since day one. The best mileage we have been able to achieve in two years of ownership (with the tires fully pumped, highway coasting, warm weather) has been around 30mpg. We have NEVER gotten higher. Usually, around town we average 25-27mpg. We have taken the car in 4 times to 3 different dealers and have had the IMA, the hybrid battery, and the regular batter replaced. (Fortunately all work - almost $9000 worth - has been under warranty. My husband and I hate this car. It has never gotten the mileage that our Subaru Forester - an SUV! - routinely gets, and we bought it as a second car to get better mileage. Our whole family barely fits in it (2 adults, 2 kids, 80lb dog) AND we get crappy mileage. We are now getting about 18mpg (although to be fair, we are in a heat wave in Boston and the AC has been running very high). But this seems ridiculous. Does anyone have any other suggestions for what to have the dealer check? Can we declare the car a lemon? Any ideas? This is not our first hybrid (we had a Prius in 2007 and routinely got 45-50mpg), so we do know the "hybrid driving tricks"...

Compression and leakdown test in the gasoline engine would be a start. Check short and long term fuel trims to see if the ECU is compensating for closed loop front O2 sensor readings possibly from a bad O2 sensor.

Thank you for the suggestions - i'll tell that to the service department. The car is at the dealer now who told us that they can't find anything wrong with the car but admit that the mileage is awful and a problem. So they are supposed to be talking with Honda and figuring something out. Ridiculous.

I believe you can retrieve it from the Honda ownerlink website, if you have your VIN, radio SN, Zip and phone number. Good luck.
