Default 2006 HCHII battery failure

Dear all,

I found out today that the IMA battery in my 2006 HCHII has failed. The dealer immediately ordered a new one and of course it is covered by warranty, but I am interested in getting a sense of how widespread this is. My mechanic says it is very rare...

The car is almost exactly three years old, and has 28,000 miles on it. I have an urban commute though occasionally I take longer trips.

Anyone else out there with battery failure issues?

We've had no problems (knock on wood), close to 70,000 km. Good to hear it's getting replaced under warranty

Yes, from everything I have read on the web, yours is a rare situation. It usually in the 100,000 mile range they have been failing on older models. I'd say that was just a cell or two kicking the bucket. Find out if you can the cost for the battery, I am curious if they have come down in price.

Glad you get a new one before warranty ran out!

3.5 years, 57k miles, no issues so far with the NiMH battery.

Fuelmiser--my mechanic told me that the new battery would be $3900.00. FYI!

I do have to say, though, that I have gotten no hassle from Honda on this. When my mechanic called to tell me the problem, he had already submitted the claim and ordered the new battery. No problems with the warranty at all!

For people committed to keeping their cars long term, past the warranty period, hopefully that cost will come down, or the less expensive refurb options will be readily available.

Hmm: what does this do to trade-in values?

From when I last looked at the Honda hybrids at http://avt.inl.gov/hev.shtml, IIRC, none had any HV battery problems. Some seemed to hit transmission and catalytic converter probs around 90K miles.

It's not a very large sample size though...

My two 2006 HCHII have over 80,000 km each now... so far only regular services required. Very happy with them

Fuelmiser--I picked up my car with the new IMA battery today. Total cost would have been $2907.34. That's lower than the $3900 my mechanic originally quoted.

Nothing. I have the same car with more miles than you with some brutal street commuting between long freeway treks. Not so much as a hiccup.
