Not to divert the thread. But I have no problem with a Manager giving me a project and outlining the goals of that project, which appears to be what you are saying.

We know that some people take their search for efficiency pretty darned seriously and we know that some people have made statements to the effect that they should be banned from the roads. No need to do that again.

What I had hoped to accomplish is an exploration of the middle ground. So far it seems like there's quite a bit of it. I didn't realize that to begin with, which is why I started by asking about the word.
That wasn't directed at you. Just a comment in general about the use of the word hypermiling.

Yes, that's what I meant - that it meets specific goals, meets a certain quality (as opposed to "just do it").

I know most drivers just "drive their cars" and not consern themselves with it. I'm OK with that too, but I'd hope they wouldn't throw stones (Or think less of) the few of us who do.
I couldn't agree more. I have problems with anyone who judges a persons character, simply by what or how they drive. That works both ways for me. A car does not determine who a person is. Driving a Hybrid to max it out for fuel economy does not make some one SMUG. Driving a SUV to and from work does not make someone an EGO MANIAC. It works both ways, and attaching labels, or stereotyping, anyone based on the vehicle they drive is wrong.

I'm going to hafta respectfully disagree with this one. How and what someone drives can definately be clue to their character.

For example:

You are driving along minding your own business and out of nowhere a rusted out pickup truck with open headers goes screaming past you. It is night time so you can easily see the red shower of sparks from the cigarette embers as the butt hits the ground. Being night time you don't see the beer can until after it hits your grill and spirals up into your windshield.....

Notice how this story does not read the same if you substitute "Pruis" for "rusted out pickup truck"?

Over in Priuschat, someone started a thread "Are we overemphasizing MPG?" and we're in a thread titled "Hypermiler - Negative perception?" . . .:
  • GreenHybrid - hybrid cars and technology
  • PriusChat - one model of hybrid
For GreenHybrid and PriusChat, mileage is a just one of many aspects of hybrid technology. So we also look at creature comforts, maintenance and a lot of things having nothing to do with mileage. . . .

For me, mileage data is like reading a tire pressure gauge, volt ohm meter or oil test. It is another tool about how things work. . . .

And I will have to partly disagree. How one drives, whether in the pickup or Prius, can give clues to character, like any particular behavior. But not what one drives. The pickup driver could be the redneck Bubba you describe, a frugal soul with a run-down appearing but fully functional vehicle, or a professional hauling trash to the dump in his weekend utility vehicle. It's a cliche but it applies: Don't judge a book by its cover.

To me, the story will read the same with "Prius" substituted. Either way, the driver's behavior is what matters.

Disclaimer: I'm and MPG phreak

Thread seems to be getting kinda heated. A bit of humor to cool it off?

I know it's gotten a lot of traffic, but still makes me laugh.

Exactly! Success is when my non-technical wife gets the same mileage as I do by "just driving" the car.
