My HAH has 6K miles and had been averaging 29 mpg in mostly city driving. The last two tanks have suddenly averaged 21 mpg. I've been driving the same routes using the same gasoline and driving habits. The weather has gotten cooler but nothing else has changed. The car seems to idle faster and I haven't noticed the electric kick in as often or the ECO light coming on as often.

I don't have a lot of faith in the local Honda dealer and wanted this groups opinion and experience before I took it to the dealer.

Have you had any service done like an oil change?

How about making sure the air in the tires is at least up to what is recomended by Honda?

I notice the mpg's stay more consistantly high on our 05HAH if we use mid grade or premium fuel. If we use 87 octane, the car of course operates well but the mpg seems to be more erratic and lower over all.

Is this the first cold weather you've seen. Cold weather and short trips really hurt the FE.

 

The car isn't due for service till 7500 miles so it hasn't been in. I did bump the PSI in the tires to 34 and may go to 36 if the ride doesn't suffer too much. While the weather has gotten cooler it hasn't been cold and the only difference is I'm not using the air conditioner. Our Prius MPG goes down in the winter but it's gradual and not off the cliff like the HAH. I'll see how this next tank goes. Where I drive and how I drive hasn't changed.

You might want to consider bi-weekly, top-offs on Friday evening and Sunday evening. This will let you separate the weekday from weekend driving and get a clue as to which one seems to be suffering the most.

I have had the same issue with my HCHII. Typically average 52-54 MPG. Last week or two has been 45MPG on a good day. seen as low as 40MPG.

Headwinds, increased rolling resistance from rain, significantly cooler temps, and/or a change in fuel formulations have been my guesses. No other changes to note....

 

Thanks for the input. I've already noticed a difference from the tire pressure change, and 34 PSI hasn't affected the ride to any extent.

 

I had increased my tire pressure to @ 39psi COLD a couple of months back. I checked this am and it was @ 36psi COLD, I am assuming due to the decreasing temps. Pumped up to 42psi now... we'll see how it goes.
